When the coronavirus pandemic shut down movie theaters for months, many of our movie-watching habits changed for good. When was the last time you went to the movies? There may be no true replacement to sinking into the dark, in a big leather recliner with a lap full of popcorn and a seemingly bottomless fountain beverage. But plenty of us would rather watch the latest release on our couch. We have a vista of options, from an array of streaming services, all available through our remote. Movie theaters: Regal Great Northern Mall Stadium 10 & RPX in North Olmsted is closing after less than 10 years in business, reports Joey Morona. The move comes as Regal parent Cineworld looks to emerge from bankruptcy intact. Householder loan? Lawyers for Larry Householder say the former Ohio House speaker did not pocket almost $500,000 for his accused participation in an illicit bribery scheme. They say the money was actually a loan from Jeff Longstreth, a former top political aide. But Andrew Tobias reports that public records show Householder never disclosed owing Longstreth any money on mandatory, annual financial disclosure forms. Householder trial: A COVID-19 infection within the jury pool has delayed the trial of former Ohio House speaker Larry Householder and an alleged conspirator until at least next week, Jake Zuckerman reports. The delay interrupts the testimony of Blane Wetzel, the FBI special agent who managed the investigation into the Householder, lobbyist Matt Borges and three other alleged conspirators. Sherrod Brown: U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat whose reelection chances next year are deemed a toss-up by political prognosticators, on Wednesday blamed Ohio’s Republican drift in statewide races on the decline of unions and Republicans changing election rules. Sabrina Eaton reports Brown told reporters the decline of unions has contributed to lower wages and declining economic growth in Ohio, and said the state’s Republican-controlled legislature “cares more about guns and abortion and stopping people who love each other from marrying each other ... than they do investing in this economy.” SNAP cuts: Cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in March will impact hundreds of thousands of Ohio households of all backgrounds, from older Ohioans and married couples to two-worker households and those with disabilities, according to the latest census estimates. Zachary Smith reports that in November, 738,000 households in Ohio received SNAP benefits. Those remaining on the program will lose at least some of their benefits when the special pandemic program ends. |

Firing upheld: A federal appeals panel on Wednesday upheld the firing of a Cleveland EMS captain over offensive online posts he made about the 2014 fatal police shooting of Tamir Rice. The U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals found that the city’s firing of Jamie Marquardt did not violate Marquardt’s First Amendment right to free speech, upholding a district judge’s ruling, Adam Ferrise reports. White Pond: Akron residents are fighting the city's controversial sale of 68 acres off White Pond Drive to a developer who wants to build a $55 million housing and retail project. Homeowners near the site and a group, LEAD for Pollinators, filed a lawsuit in Summit County Common Pleas Court this week that says City Council violated the city’s charter when it voted to approve the sale last month to Triton Property Ventures. |

Carjacking injury: A suspected carjacker sent a Cleveland woman to the hospital after he jumped into her SUV at a Brooklyn Centre gas station and sped off while she hung from the door, prosecutors allege. John Tucker reports the car quickly crashed, sending the 27-year-old woman to the ground. Store shooting: A Pennsylvania man sentenced to more than 13 years in prison on Wednesday told a federal judge he felt “grateful” that bullets fired by deputy U.S. marshals hit him instead of other bystanders at a packed shopping center in Cleveland. Adam Ferrise reports DeWayne Taylor, 33, told the judge he was upset that he forced the marshals into firing at him in the Walmart parking lot in Steelyard Commons, especially because a grandmother and her grandchild were so close to the shooting. 96-year-old: Authorities say that a 96-year-old Cleveland man who died in October was murdered. When police found Curtis Sutton in his bed on Oct. 11, they did not suspect any foul play, but the medical examiner ruled Sutton’s death a homicide because of a “failure to thrive with dehydration and bronchopneumonia,” reports Olivia Mitchell. |

Sports Awards: A Guardians fan favorite, a longtime football coach who has made it his mission to mentor players on and off the field, and a solid season on the diamond were among the honorees at the 23rd Greater Cleveland Sports Awards. Marc Bona reports more than 1,600 people attended Wednesday night’s ceremony at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, commemorating local high school, collegiate and professional athletes. Beard Awards: Three Cleveland chefs were named semifinalists for the 2023 James Beard Awards, reports Paris Wolfe. Brandon Chrostowski of EDWINS Leadership and Restaurant Institute is a semifinalist for outstanding restauranteur nationally for the second year in a row. Chefs Allie La Valle-Umansky and Jeremy Umansky of Larder Delicatessen & Bakery are semifinalists for Best Chef: Great Lakes. Tito pizza: Guardians Manager Terry Francona popped into the original Geraci’s in University Heights to make some pies and sample new menu items for the slice shop, which aims to open in downtown Cleveland this April, reports Marc Bona. Francona is an investor in the eatery, which is located in the former Vincenza’s Pizza & Pasta. Wedding expo: How helpful are wedding expos? At a recent event, there were 39 venues, 21 photography companies, 18 catering companies and 17 entertainment companies, writes Jane Morice. She decided the expos are best for women who are newly engaged and have absolutely no idea what they’d like for their special day. Maple syrup: Northeast Ohio is a maple syrup-producing region, with Chardon as its capital. Gathering maple sap to reduce into the sweet elixir usually starts in mid-February, but last week’s warm weather had some producers wondering if they should start collecting sap early, reports Paris Wolfe. |
