July 1st will either be Annexation Day, or just another Wednesday. The warnings against Israel making a unilateral move have reached frantic levels – as have the tone of cheerleaders pushing for annexation now.
Israel's Gulf allies, with whom normalization was beginning to feel inevitable, are pushing back. Nawaf Obaid, a former advisor to Saudi Arabia's Prince Turki al-Faisal, asks why Israelis aren't listening when Arabs, led by Saudi, talk peace. For Palestinians, skepticism abounds about Gulf states' noise on annexation, and silence on occupation, as described by Yousef Alhelou.
Christian evangelicals are by far the largest pro-Israel lobby in DC; several leaders close to Trump want him to greenlight annexation now, including Pastor John Hagee, who calls for America to keep its word to Israel. Joshua Shanes, in response, asks why Muslim-hating, anti-Semitic extremists like Hagee are so fervent about annexation.
How will the world's largest Jewish diaspora community respond? Anshel Pfeffer predicts there will be discomfort and dissonance – but no divorce. When the storied AJC came out with a defense of annexation, Russel Neiss asked where it hid its moral backbone. As Chabad in Israel breaks its decade-long political silence to slam any potential Palestinian state, Eric Yoffie queries if the outreach movement is making a calamitous mistake. And Rachel Havrelock explores how the idea of a nationalist, militarized Bible brings Trump and settlers together.
Away from the West Bank, Jan Grabowski recalls a meeting with his German historian peers and their refusal to consider non-German Europeans as partly responsible for the Holocaust – and how that's become both official German policy and a form of revisionism. Alexander Reid Ross delves into Russia's dirty, determined disinformation war against Black Lives Matter.
And ICYMI, I wrote about a bizarre interview that Tablet magazine conducted with neo-Nazis' favorite academic, Kevin MacDonald, and why Jewish publications shouldn't abase themselves by cosying up to white nationalists.
