How a U.S. F1 deal died
Formula 1 is a brutal environment in which to operate, and Michael Andretti opening up today over the reasons why he didn’t buy-in to the Alfa Romeo team shouldn’t come as a surprise. Famously known as the ‘Piranha Club’, F1’s reputation for chewing up and spitting out credible competitors has little comparison in world motorsports – certainly not IndyCar, where Andretti is used to operating. Although he certainly does know how quickly F1 can jettison a driver! Michael says the deal died at the “11th hour” and that he was forced to “step away” as the deal wasn’t all he thought it was. There was no way he was going to settle for being an investor and not the boss, and it’s a real shame that a door has been slammed in the face of an American interest – given the recent huge success of the US Grand Prix.
