I remember getting my first Bible when I was in elementary school. A sparkly-covered Adventure Bible that now sits on the shelf in my office. It was purple, and I felt like I had arrived in some Awana Kid way. As I grew older, I graduated to leather-bound editions, and in college when my dorm caught fire, it singed the gold edges of my Bible but somehow the pages stopped burning around 2 Peter 3:10. You know, the passage where we’re reminded everything temporary will burn up. Something about the Word of God carries not only memories but actually stabilizes me. In seasons of loss or seasons of rejoicing, it speaks truth and peace. In the ever-changing world we live in, it’s a comfort to know that these words don’t fade or rust or break up with you like that boy in Bible college did. No, it turns out that Scripture is the one sure thing we can hold onto. Which is exactly why this week we’re talking about the power of God’s Word. First, we’re hearing from leading Bible teachers with decades of experience in, “Women Read the Bible More Than Men. Why?” Plus we have a piece by K.J. Ramsey titled, “Scripture Won’t Let You Endure Suffering on Your Own.” A chronic-illness fighter, Ramsey reminds us of the darker, heavier realities of seeking comfort in scripture. The beauty of the Bible is that no matter how I’m finding you today in this moment, the answer is: go to the Word. It will lift you up, it will sit with you in the pit, and it will last longer than any glittery purple edition—no matter how cool it made you feel. |
