Private equity deal news and insights from the New York newsroom

Ampersand Capital, PAI, Miura pursue global expansion in surgical equipment; LLR Partners invests in clinical trial software provider TruTechnologies

Morning Hubsters, John R Fischer here in the New York newsroom coming at you with the US Wire.

Global expansion potential is one of the main drivers for PE investments in several sectors, and surgical equipment is no different. I have five deals that showcase the potential dealmakers see in this area. Ampersand Capital, PAI Partners and Miura Partners are among the firmstransacting in the segment.

For Friday Focus, we shift to clinical trial software – another sector with global growth opportunities. We’re delving into a deal by LLR Partners, as well as having a broader look at the sector.

Ready to operate
Surgical procedures are on the rise – several sources estimate over 300 million are performed each year worldwide. Private equity has noted the demand, and with it the opportunity to invest in manufacturers and distributors of surgical equipment. Medtech innovations and consolidation opportunities in the fragmented market have increased dealmakers’ attraction to these businesses, leading to a slew of deals in the segment.

PE Hub rounded up five deals from the beginning of the year on investments in the sector.

Upgrade to the premium version of the Wire to read highlights from two of them.

Friday Focus

Earlier this week, LLR Partners announced a growth investment in TruTechnologies, a software developer for real-time clinical trial oversight and transparency.

The need for real-time interoperability is driving private equity to invest in clinical trial software, which is an underpenetrated market.

I summarized this and other drivers in a mini-feature published earlier in May on PE investments in clinical trial software, speaking to the likes of Nordic Capital, The Riverside Company and investment bank Union Square Advisors.

Premium subscribers of the Wire can learn more about the LLR Partners deal and these drivers, namely interoperability, automation and risk compliance.

Well, that’s it from me. As always, if you have any questions, thoughts or want to chat, please email me at [email protected].

Nina Lindholm is back in the Europe chair on Monday, while Rafael Canton will handle the US Wire.

Cheers,

John

Succession events, one of several demand drivers of GP stakes investing, are taking on greater significance as private market firms expand and mature. This is the finding of a white paper by Investcorp Strategic Capital Group, the GP stakes arm of Investcorp. The paper argues that while long-term succession planning is vital to extending the life of private market franchises, it is also becoming trickier to do as franchises gain in value. (Buyouts)

Managers have taken an increasingly sophisticated view of secondaries, eyeing the market as an opportunity to diversify the underlying investor base of closed-end funds once a strategy is well and truly past its seeding stage – and raising follow-on capital to boot. Natixis Investment Managers affiliate Flexstone Partners is the latest manager to mull a potential transaction. What is particularly novel about Flexstone’s approach is that it is thinking about this on day one of the fundraising process, a market source tells Secondaries Investor.

Alberta Investment Management Corporation talks with Infrastructure Investor about the success of the $15.4 billion September sale of data center group AirTrunk.

Time to get real about climate resilience: In a world where certainty is in short supply, climate change is an area where – sadly – certainty exists. “One thing we could all do is be more honest about the financial impact of climate change,” said Simon Hallett, a partner and head of climate strategy at Cambridge Associates. “It has been massively, massively underdone and underappreciated.” (New Private Markets)

With DEI and ESG facing fierce backlash in the US, GPs may wonder if they should pull back on any related initiatives. However, a new LP survey from Edelman Smithfield suggests they should stay the course, as investors indicated they value sponsors that embrace both concepts. (Private Funds CFO)

Thorns among the evergreens? Semi-liquid private debt funds are proliferating and hold obvious appeal, but investors must be alert to the risks. (Private Debt Investor)

Taiwan Life Insurance is selling a portfolio consisting of exposure to China-US Industrial Cooperation Offshore Partnership and 10 other private equity funds worth approximately $460 million in total, according to a 27 May filing. They said it

“There’s a good exit environment in the clinical trial technology space with lots of end market PE firms looking for a platform as well as global PE investors that own much larger companies and public companies there.”

— Joe Manning, senior partner at the Riverside Company, on the exit environment for PE investments in clinical trial software.
