Note From the Writer's Desk: |
Amazon researchers claimed they have produced the largest text-to-speech generative AI to date: the Big Adaptive Streamable text-to-speech model, or BASE TTS. The researchers trained the BASE TTS model on 100,000 hours of public domain data to get it to produce "emergent" behaviors. This doesn't mean the AI can take action on its own; instead, it has remarkable abilities to change the tone of a passage of text, use "non-words" like "shh" and complex compound words, or tailor text to emotions. Amazon's examples of generated speech are naturalistic and smooth. BASE TTS is not going to replace Hollywood actors any time soon, but the examples might be suitable for narrated slide presentations or workplace training videos. There is no information yet about whether BASE TTS might be integrated into Amazon products and services or opened up to the public. The researchers caution that the model can be misused, which is why they declined to make it open source. However, they propose, the model could be used for beneficial purposes such as restoring the ability to speak to people who have lost it due to accidents or illnesses.
