| COVER STORY: SOUTHEAST ASIA ROUNDTABLE The Southeast Asia region has had a very interesting first half of the year, with elections in two major economies (Indonesia, Thailand), the impact of the U.S.-China trade war and other developments. While the region remains a hotspot for deals and investment, law firms are also facing a changing legal industry, and having to formulate strategies to keep up with the same. We speak to law firm leaders about how all this has impacted their firm and what they’ve been focusing on. | FEATURE: OFFSHORE LAW With the growth of new industries in Asia, such as fintech and crypto, biotech and more, we look at how offshore law firms are increasingly being involved in catering to these exciting new sectors. | REPORT: UAE The UAE is increasingly turning to its Asia-Pacific partners to grow foreign trade in the region, which accounted for about 42 per cent of the country’s total non-oil trade in the first nine months of 2018. FDI from China, the UAE’s biggest trading partner in Asia, was valued at $9.1 billion at the end of 2017, in 2018, Indian investors accounted for 31 FDI projects in Dubai with a total value of $8.7 billion. We speak to lawyers in the UAE, as well as other Asian countries, about how they are assisting the growth of this trade and investment. | LIST: FIRMS TO WATCH - SINGAPORE As with Indonesia, India and Malaysia, ALB names 10 firms in Singapore which are small (less than 10 partners) but matching their larger counterparts in terms of work and quality of service. Please email [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] for submission forms. | REPORT: INDONESIA In his second term, Jokowi wants to speed up infrastructure spending in Indonesia, especially on urban and digital projects, to boost economic growth. He's also promised to reduce poverty, keep prices low and improve tax revenue. The government has already embarked on a $350 billion (S$473 billion) infrastructure drive, the biggest in the nation's history, but needs to do more to ease bottlenecks, particularly in transport and electricity. We speak to lawyers about what they expect from his second term in terms of policies and regulations. | REPORT: EMPLOYMENT LAW We speak to lawyers across the region about employment law updates in a variety of Asian markets, including trends related to fixed/non-fixed term contracts, independent contractors, managing global workforce/foreign employees, collective bargaining, retrenchment, and more. | REPORT: MALAYSIA Malaysia-China relations have improved after a frosty 12 months. After Mahathir visited China’s Belt and Road forum, Malaysia made a U-turn and revived two major projects - the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project and the Bandar Malaysia project. As the prospects for normalised bilateral ties brighten, we speak to lawyers in both China and Malaysia on what they expect. | POST-EVENT COVERAGE: JAPAN LAW AWARDS Winners, photos, quotes and more from the ALB Japan Law Awards 2019. |
