| Guest Editorial: T-Mobile Supports Taking 'September 11th Radio Spectrum' Away. Public Safety, Let Them Know They’re Wrong… Again Author: Chuck Dowd, Assistant Chief (Retired), NYPD Shortly after the September 11th terror attacks, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) assigned critically needed radio frequencies (4.9 GHz) nationwide to first responders. T-Mobile, in recent FCC filings, now supports taking it away from public safety for commercial use. Public safety -- protect your spectrum! Sign the on-line petition. read more |

Sitka emergency responders quarantine after possible coronavirus exposure Six emergency responders in Sitka are quarantining after a possible exposure to COVID-19. Outgoing Fire Chief Dave Miller said they were responding to a house fire where one woman died on Sept. 18. They found out after administering CPR that the patient may have had the coronavirus. "Everything happened so fast that CPR was the highest priority to try to save a life, and that's what we tried to do," Miller said. He said once they found out about the possible exposure, they immediately followed the emergency response team's protocols for COVID-19. "We knew right away what we needed to do and that was to quarantine them, get them tested, get them quarantined, test them two or three times, to make sure everything was okay with them," Miller said. "And that's the highest priority is just to make sure that they're all safe and sound." KCAW 104.7 FM PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters contain fire at New Mexico recycling yard VIDEO: The Bernalillo County Fire Department and Albuquerque Fire Rescue have contained a large fire at a recycling yard in the area of Edith and Montano on Tuesday. "The smoke was very black, I don't know if that means it's hot or what; you could see the flames, they were probably higher than our building. It was just really scary," said Amanda Philip, who works nearby. AFR reports there are 20 units at the scene of the outside fire in addition to Kirtland Air Force Base Crash & Foam trucks. Fire officials say the fire did not cause any damage to the building. All occupants at the facility were also evacuated along with nearby homes. No injuries were been reported. Crews say they were able to respond within five minutes of getting the call, getting a good and early handle on the fire. "Most of the damage, most of the flames are outside, exterior to a holding area. Nothing interior at all at this time," said Captain Martin Salazar with AFR. KRQE-TV CBS/FOX 13 ALBUQUERQUE Tattoos a unique form of therapy for Las Vegas shooting survivors The terrifying moment a gunman opened fire on a crowd of Las Vegas concertgoers is painfully etched into survivor Dean McAuley's memory. Now he and others who escaped the Oct. 1, 2017, mass shooting on the Strip are having healing images etched on their skin, something McAuley calls a "reminder of survival" and a "badge of honor." On Wednesday, 21 shooting survivors and first responders will receive free tattoos as a form of therapy at the Seven Tattoo Studio on Polaris Avenue. The event, Healing Ink, is being organized by Artists 4 Israel, a nonprofit group that has provided "therapy tattoos" for survivors of terrorist attacks and mass shootings. "Artists 4 Israel perfected this unique trauma therapy. They can incorporate existing scars into works of art or create meaningful images that draw the eye away from wounds. This allows victims to reclaim their bodies and the stories they tell," the organization said in a statement. LAS VEGAS SUN A timeline of the insidious path the coronavirus took around the world to kill more than 1 million It started as a seemingly perplexing case of pneumonia. From a wet market in Wuhan, China, COVID-19 has spread to nearly every country on the globe in just under nine months. It's overturned daily lives, shuttered businesses and schools, and disrupted the world economy. It's infected more than 33 million people worldwide and has killed at least 1 million people — a toll that's likely to be far more than the official tallies show, global health officials say. The coronavirus has laid bare public health shortcomings in even the most advanced countries on the planet that, up until 2020, hadn't witnessed a pandemic for more than 100 years. In the U.S., COVID-19 has tested hospital systems and their capacity to treat severely ill patients and has pushed drug companies to try to develop vaccines and therapeutics in record time. CNBC Old fire station in California converted into mental health facility to prevent suicide among firefighters Modern day firefighters benefit from high tech equipment and regular training but those measures do little to shield them from their number one killer: suicide. "Our firefighters experience terrible things. Terrible things that they can't share with their families because it is just going to depress their families, quite honestly," said Los Angeles City Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas. The department's labor union, the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, on Monday took a major step towards suicide prevention for 3,500 members and their families. They converted an old fire station in Arleta to become the United Firefighters of Los Angeles Center for Health and Wellness, which will provide space for counseling and classroom training. Its staff will include mental health specialists who will be available around the clock, plus an additional 100 peer counselors in the field. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES Public invited to America's Tribute to Fallen Firefighters The foundation invites residents to watch the 45 minute special on the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation website and through the foundation's social media platforms at 10 a.m. Sunday, as well as take a moment to read the 2020 Roll of Honor; a collection of stories about fire heroes submitted by their families, friends and fellow firefighters. Normally events of the National Memorial take place in Emmitsburg, Maryland, at the location of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, but the foundation had postponed the annual memorial in June due to the challenges of planning a large, in-person event amid uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We could not risk the health and safety of Fire Hero Families, our staff volunteers and attendees by having our traditional Memorial weekend," National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Executive Director Chief Ronald Siarnicki said. "We encourage all of our Fire Hero Families, members of the fire service and general public to join us Sunday." THE ROLLA DAILY NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
