Fire officials across Alaska are looking to improve fire and fume safety by distributing and installing new smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Scott Ellis is the chief of Bayside Fire Department, just north of Kodiak city limits, and is compiling the list of eligible homes on the island. "When the list is compiled, it goes out (to) the state fire marshal," he said. "They send us back with the actual smoke and CO detectors, and the installs take place." He said while he's taking the lead on the list, it's a multi-agency effort between all of the fire departments on the archipelago. The free detectors aren't for just anyone, though. According to an email from the Alaska State Fire Marshal's Office, they're prioritizing residences with elders, in-home childcare facilities, individuals with disabilities, or low-income households.  

Multiple businesses in Lynnfield were destroyed Tuesday night when intense flames tore through a strip mall. The fire happened around 9 p.m. at the strip mall on Post Office Square. Daylight revealed significant damage to multiple businesses. Lynnfield Fire Chief Glenn Davis said most of the businesses will likely be a total loss. No injuries have been reported following the fire, which happened while the businesses were closed. Initial reports indicated that the fire may have started somewhere near Old Towne Market, which is in the middle of the strip mall. Flames then spread to nearby businesses, including a Dunkin'. Davis said it is an old building with no sprinklers. There's a common attic space that runs the whole length of the strip mall, allowing the fire to spread very quickly. Multiple fire departments were required to put out the flames.  

More than 45,000 people are living with the physical manifestations of the September 11 attacks more than two decades after the tragedy. At least 45,200 civilians and officers from the FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are suffering from at least one cancer or disease that has been directly linked to the largest terrorist attack in history. The whopping total is 1,408% greater than the death toll for the tragedy itself: 2,997 victims were killed in the Twin Tower collapse and aftermath. The shocking number reflects the amount of victims enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program with verified illnesses — but because the project only recognizes some cancers and diseases, officials warn the true total of sick survivors is much higher.  

VIDEO: Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes was up early on Tuesday to give back to local first responders. Skenes traded his baseball glove for an apron and some bottles of barbecue sauce, serving up a free hot meal and some big checks to local first responders. "The sacrifices that you make, whether you recognize it or not, are more than any of us can ever repay you for," Skenes told first responders. "It's nice because you get a celebrity like Paul Skenes, you know, showing up at these events — a lot of people don't understand we are volunteer, we do get some money from the borough, but most of our money we have to go out and raise," said Chief Joseph Cambest with the South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company. Skenes, the Gary Sinise Foundation and American Tire Distributors presented six Pittsburgh-area departments with $150,000 to buy life-saving equipment.
