Confidential Fire Chief Recruitment: Jefferson County Fire District #1 – Madras, OR
----- Last Week to Express Interest -----
A small but enthusiastic crowd cheered on local hockey players making good use of the ice for a good cause at the MTA Events Center during the 17th annual Palmer Fire Firefighters Charity Hockey Game, March 27. "It was a low-key event," Aces alumni player William Wrenn said. "Anytime you get a group of guys that like hockey and it's for a good cause, it's gonna be a good event regardless of the turnout." This event serves as a fundraiser that fuels the volunteer Palmer firefighters' training program, aiding their efforts to acquire much-needed equipment to better prepare for fires and other emergencies. It also fuels firefighters' efforts supporting local youth programs during the school year, and providing gifts and toys to local families over the holiday season. Each year, hockey alumni from the Alaska Aces, UAA Seawolves, and other organizations volunteer to help out with the event.

VIDEO: About 150 firefighters worked feverishly to put out a massive fire at a waste management facility in the Brighton Park neighborhood Tuesday. The wind-blown fire started around 4 p.m. in a prairie near the railway about a block away from Waste Management of Illinois, Inc.'s recycling facility near 48th Place and Christiana Avenue, according to a statement from the company. Embers were blown into the plant's yard, resulting in the recyclable materials catching fire. In a matter of minutes, it ignited the Southwest Side recycling plant and quickly erupted into a full-blown inferno. "One side was fire and the other side was like, catching on fire, like smoking," witness Ferdinand Miranda said. As fire trucks raced to the burning Brighton Park plant, employees scrambled out just ahead of the flames. "I heard one guy ask if anyone was still in there," Miranda said.

VIDEO: An Oklahoma City firefighter who lost a fellow firefighter to lung cancer will participate in the American Lung Association's outdoor Fight For Air Climb in Oklahoma to raise money for research. Cpl. Zach Rowell has witnessed both triumph and tragedy in the battle against lung cancer. He lost a colleague to the disease, but his father survived it. Rowell is taking on the Fight for Air Climb in memory of his friend and in honor of his father, according to an American Lung Association news release. "Looking at the stats of cancer and lung disease, firefighters are at a very high risk and are susceptible to it," he said. "We know it's an issue and a risk, so, we're going to fight for progress." Rowell will be one of 20-25 firefighters on the Oklahoma City-Fire Rescue team of climbers, who have raised over $2,400 for the Lung Association. "The Lung Association is the industry leader in research," Rowell said.

VIDEO: Buffalo Firefighters struck three alarms for additional personnel and equipment to handle a fire that broke out Tuesday morning on Bailey Avenue near Clinton Street. Firefighters were called to the scene just after 10:50 a.m. Photos from the scene showed heavy smoke coming from a bowling alley/restaurant known as the Bowl Inn Pizza and Lanes in the 700 block of Bailey Avenue. The smoke billowed high into the sky and could be seen on the skyline from Orchard Park and along Route 190. Buffalo Fire officials say the fire started in the back of the structure, and caused the roof of the building to partially collapse. They say there were several 50 gallon propane tanks on the roof at the time it collapsed. Firefighters had been inside the structure trying to battle the flames, but fortunately they were all pulled out by orders of a chief on scene before the roof gave way. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

VIDEO: After months of waiting and anticipating the reveal of the new Hattiesburg fire engine, the day finally came Tuesday. The truck is not your average fire truck. The Southern Miss-themed engine is painted black and gold with the USM Golden Eagle logo on its side. The colors were chosen to signify the great relationship between the university and the city of Hattiesburg. "When it was coming time to update our fleet, especially as we prepare for Station 9, we thought that we would brand this one in honor of the university that has done so much for our community," said Mayor Toby Barker. The mayor and Hattiesburg Fire Chief Sherrocko Stewart came up with the idea. There is also a Golden Eagle painted on the doors to represent how much pride the city takes in the athletics department at the university. The truck will be stationed at Fire Station 6, which is near USM's campus.

VIDEO: A family was reunited with special belongings left behind after a fire caused them to leave their house more than a decade ago. This wouldn't have been possible, however, without the eagerness of a Savannah firefighter who made it her mission to put the treasures back into the right hands. The house that once stood there was being used by the Savannah Fire Department for training exercises. Unbeknownst to them they would find long-lost family treasures that were stuffed in the attic, leading Captain Chela Gutierrez on a hunt to find the family they belong to. "There's wool in here," said Captain Gutierrez. This quilt is one of about 15 others left behind after part of a family's home caught on fire. "I saw a trash bag full of like brightly-colored fabric and I said, ‘that looks like quilts.'" Captain Chela Gutierrez with Savannah Fire says they were using the blighted home on Cumming Street for training before it was torn down. It had been abandoned for decades.
