Governor Mike Dunleavy Announces COVID-19 Vaccine Available to All Alaskans Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy today announced effective immediately the COVID-19 vaccine is available for all individuals who live or work in Alaska and are age 16 and older, making Alaska the first state in the nation to remove eligibility requirements. "This historic step is yet another nationwide first for Alaska, but it should come as no surprise. Since day one, your response to the pandemic has been hands-down the best in the nation," said Governor Mike Dunleavy. "I couldn't be prouder of Alaska's response. From being the first state to offer widespread testing, to maintaining one of the lowest mortality rates in the country, to rolling out vaccinations to every willing Alaskan, we got here by working together." "It is a great day for Alaskans wanting to receive the COVID-19 vaccine," said Adam Crum, Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. "I want to thank Governor Dunleavy for this opportunity and if Alaskans had any questions about vaccine eligibility and criteria, I hope today's announcement clears it up for you, simply put, you are eligible to get the vaccine." WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK Related YouTube Video: Fatal Bronx 3-Alarm Fire Village board in Illinois reverses decision to close fire station following rally, community dissent It seems the adage is true: It takes a village. In this case, an outspoken one. Following a recent decision from village officials to close the fire station at 831 E Lake Ave. and reallocate its resources to the other stations, a group of Glenview residents spoke out. In response, the village decided to reverse its plan, keep all five stations open and revisit the data to explore other options. Residents, first responders and other stakeholders said they should have been more involved in the process and expressed concern that closing a station on the east side would lead to longer response times. A rally held outside the station Saturday brought out a few hundred attendees. "When I saw the village of Glenview completely ignoring their taxpayers, their residents, their firefighters, I was mad, and I felt like I had to do something," said Glenbrook High School sophomore Drew Duffy, who organized the rally. "This is us taking a stand." CHICAGO TRIBUNE - METERED SITE Firefighters, Faith Leaders Team Up to Vaccinate Vulnerable in Florida VIDEO: At the end of a recent Sunday evening Spanish-language Mass, the Rev. Roberto Cid made an announcement that perked up many gray-haired heads. "If you are over 65 and a Florida resident and want a COVID vaccine, call the parish office and we can help you," the Roman Catholic priest said, as happy nodding spread through the pews of historic St. Patrick church. In much of the country, getting the coveted vaccine has been tremendously difficult for many older adults due to complicated and overtaxed websites and bureaucracies — and even more so for those who have disabilities, are homebound or have no family to help. But in Miami Beach, faith leaders and the fire department have joined resources to expedite getting shots in the arms of older adults starting with the homebound and those in low-income housing, winning plaudits from both the newly vaccinated and their relieved relatives. WTVJ-TV NBC 6 MIAMI 8-year-old raises $1,000-plus for Wisconsin fire department A lot of 8-year-olds create reams of artwork, which then goes on to hang on the refrigerator until it gets stale and ceases to be seen as art. Johnson Creek resident Bentley Schacht's art, on the contrary, is hanging on people's walls. His bold colors and designs stand out, as does his commitment to raise money for the Jefferson Fire Department. For the past few months, Bentley has been doing a brisk business selling both spin art and pour art, on ready-to-hang canvas, so far raising $1,000 for the local volunteer fire department. Bentley, a third-grader at East Elementary School in Jefferson, started doing the innovative art with his dad, Brent Schacht, who teaches at East. When Bentley had more artworks then the family personally could store, the 8-year-old decided to use this art to help people. DAILY JEFFERSON COUNTY UNION 'It will always be remembered': Deadly Brockton Strand Theatre fire in Massachusetts vivid 80 years later VIDEO: The Strand Theatre, situated in Brockton's bustling downtown business district, was showing the film "Hoosier School Boy," starring Mickey Rooney, followed by "Secret Evidence," on Sunday, March 9, 1941. It was a busy and normal evening for the theater at Main and School streets, which sat 1,685 people. Hours after the last showing, early into Monday morning, the night custodian, Christopher Moore, discovered a fire in the basement below the candy counter and instructed his helper, Roger Thunert, to activate fire alarm box 1311 at Main and High streets. The Brockton Fire Department received the box alarm at 12:38 a.m. and sent the first apparatus to the scene. A second alarm followed at 12:44 a.m., and finally a general alarm at 1:19 a.m., bringing all of the city's firefighters to the scene, including those who were off-duty that morning. When firefighters first arrived, all indications were that they were not dealing with a very serious fire. THE ENTERPRISE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
