Work finishing up on Marten Creek, Discovery Creek fires The BLM Alaska Fire Service is wrapping up work on a pair of Yukon Flats fire this week as the days get shorter, cooler and wetter. With work reaching completion, equipment and firefighting personnel will be pulled from both the Marten Creek Fire (#386) and the Discovery Creek Fire (#388) on Wednesday. There will be a flurry of activity in Venetie for the next couple of days while this occurs. The BLM AFS station in Fort Yukon that has been providing support to both fires should be closed by the end of the week. Both fires will then be placed into monitor status. The Alaska Division of Forestry's White Mountain Type 2 Initial Attack (T2IA) Crew demobilized from the Marten Creek Fire on Monday, leaving the Tanana Chiefs T2IA Crew to finish the containment line and tie it into a marshy area on the southwest corner. Investigators work to determine cause of blaze at Georgia recycling plant VIDEO: Firefighters spent Tuesday afternoon battling a massive blaze at a Lithonia-area recycling facility. It happed at the Encore Recycling center located in the 6700 block of Chapman Road. Before arriving, firefighters said they spotted a large column of smoke. They found a large pile of cars on fire after arriving at the plant. The thick black smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles. Firefighters worked to battle the fire from overhead, dumping water over the cars and scrap metals at the facility's yard. Other fire departments contributed resources and helped shuttle water from an off-site hydrant. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. This is the second fire to happen at a scrapyard in metro Atlanta. WAGA-TV FOX 5 ATLANTA History Channel Sets 9/11 20th Anniversary Programming Slate With Four Documentaries The History Channel will remember 9/11 on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attack with four new documentaries. Joining History's 9/11 20th anniversary programming slate are 9/11: The Legacy, Rise And Fall: The World Trade Center, 9/11: Four Flights and 9/11: I Was There. The seven hours' worth of documentaries will provide a sweeping recollection of the historical event, providing audiences with accounts from America's children, first responders and more. In addition to the documentaries that remember the acts of heroism and reflect on how the 9/11 attacks changed the fabric of the United States, the History Channel will also feature a special episode of its podcast, HISTORY This Week. 9/11: Rescue on the Water, which will debut September 6, is an audio episode that recounts the efforts of New York's civilian, commercial and military boat captains as they orchestrated an impromptu coastal evacuation of Manhattan. DEADLINE Related: 8 Surprising Facts About The World Trade Center's Construction In early 1962, when the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officially authorized a plan to build the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, it came just months after President John F. Kennedy announced the U.S. goal of sending astronauts to the moon. The vision for the seven-building complex—which would cost an estimated $470 million (more than $4 billion in today's dollars) and include the two tallest buildings in the world—embodied that same brand of American optimism and ambition. The twin 110-story towers at the heart of the World Trade Center were designed to surpass New York's iconic Empire State Building—then the world's tallest building. Building the new towers would marshal unprecedented levels of design innovation, engineering prowess—and breathtaking risk. THE HISTORY CHANNEL Multiple fire fatality tragedy at child care home changed Pennsylvania law; some say more must be done Two years ago, the city of Erie was devastated after an overnight fire claimed the lives of five children at a family child care home. The tragedy on Aug. 11, 2019, has not been forgotten. For those who witnessed the scene at the Harris Family Day Care, the horror of seeing a parent's worst nightmare come true remains etched in their minds. All of the victims were under 9 years old: La'Myhia Jones, 8; Luther Jones Jr., 6; Ava Jones, 4; and Jaydan Augustyniak, 9 months, all siblings, and 2-year-old Dalvin Pacley. Three victims were the children of a volunteer firefighter who was responding to another blaze at the time of the fire. The fire served as a wake-up call to many. It changed the rules for child care facilities across Pennsylvania. Under a new state law, child care operators must meet more stringent fire safety requirements to operate. WITF-FM 89.5 HARRISBURG US Probing Autopilot Problems On 765,000 Tesla Vehicles After A Series Of Emergency Vehicle Collisions The U.S. government has opened a formal investigation into Tesla's Autopilot partially automated driving system after a series of collisions with parked emergency vehicles. The investigation covers 765,000 vehicles, almost everything that Tesla has sold in the U.S. since the start of the 2014 model year. Of the crashes identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of the probe, 17 people were injured and one was killed. NHTSA says it has identified 11 crashes since 2018 in which Teslas on Autopilot or Traffic Aware Cruise Control have hit vehicles at scenes where first responders have used flashing lights, flares, an illuminated arrow board or cones warning of hazards. The agency announced the action Monday in a posting on its website. WWJ-TV CBS 62 DETROIT PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
