The state announced 258 new COVID-19 resident cases on Tuesday, along with 13 new hospitalizations and one new death. The man who died was a Tok resident in his 70s. The new case count includes 33 on the peninsula, with one more nonresident case in Soldotna under investigation. The Kenai Peninsula Borough is still in the high transmission risk category, with a total of 558.30 new cases per 100,000 people in the past week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that everyone, despite vaccination status, wear masks indoors when in areas with a high risk of transmission. State data also shows that 22.5% of all hospitalizations in the Gulf Coast — which includes the Kenai Peninsula — were COVID-related as of Tuesday, compared to the statewide average of 12.3%.

Six people killed in a sightseeing plane crash were recovered and identified after crews initially struggled to reach the wreckage in southeast Alaska due to poor weather conditions. Alaska State Troopers identified the pilot and five passengers late Saturday following the crash Thursday. The aircraft went down as the pilot was returning the passengers to Ketchikan from Misty Fjords National Monument. The passengers were Mark Henderson, 69, and Jacquelyn Komplin, 60, both of Napa, California; Andrea McArthur, 55, and Rachel McArthur, 20, both of Woodstock, Georgia; and Janet Kroll, 77, of Mount Prospect, Illinois. The pilot was Rolf Lanzendorfer, 64, of Cle Elum, Washington. All five passengers were on an excursion off the Holland America Line cruise ship Nieuw Amsterdam.

VIDEO: A large warehouse fire in Fort Atkinson Tuesday displaced about 50 residents and injured some of the 150 firefighters called to the scene. The fire was reported around noon in the 700 block of Oak Street on the city's north side, police said. There was no one in the building at the time. Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said at a press conference Tuesday evening that some firefighters suffered injuries due to the heat and were treated at the scene or taken to a local hospital. Rausch said crews nearly "drained the city water system" while combating the blaze, leading to the department's decision to let the rest of the building and its contents burn. The warehouse contained tires for military vehicles, unspecified chemicals and cans from a local canning company.

VIDEO: When disaster strikes, communication is crucial. That's why the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency and Gov. Dan McKee announced Tuesday that first responders will soon start using some groundbreaking technology. These so-called "Compact Rapid Deployables" are mobile units that use satellite connectivity to make sure first responders have access to cellular and wi-fi coverage wherever they are. "During the tragic events of 9/11, it was determined that due to the extraordinary amount of cell phone usage, critical first responder messaging was lost," RIEMA Director Marc Pappas said. "First responders will be prioritized in the system so they will be heard above all of the noise in the cell tower, even in remote areas like the woods it will work."

The 70's TV show "Emergency!" introduced the concept of paramedics to millions of viewers and inspired thousands to become EMS practitioners themselves. Some historians say it launched modern EMS in the U.S. Now the two stars of the show are co-producing a documentary to tell the story of today's paramedic—following a pandemic that strained our healthcare system and revealed the critical role that paramedics play in caring for their communities. "My life was saved by two firefighter paramedics," said Randy Mantooth, who played Johnny Gage in the "Emergency!" series. "My sister's life was saved by a paramedic and a flight nurse. They literally gave us our lives back, and yet I don't even know their names." "Over-worked, sometimes overlooked and nearly always taken for granted, paramedics are real-world heroes," Mantooth said. "My hope is that "Into the Unknown" will provide the public with an understanding of and appreciation for the critical role these individuals play."

When Gerald Sanford retired from the FDNY in 1997, he never anticipated that he would return to his post after one of the darkest days in American history. In "It Started with a Helmet," Sanford and his partner, Chris Griffith, detail the gripping story of Sanford's contributions to the FDNY after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers. Sanford, a Staten Island native who grew up in Concord and later settled with his wife in Grant City, has a long history of serving the country and New York City. After graduating from McKee High School, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for two years of active duty until 1962. In 1965, he was hired by the NYPD, where he worked for three years. After that, he began a three decade-long career with the FDNY.
STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE
VIDEO: If you look closely, there are still scars left over from the explosion of a ruptured natural gas line in San Francisco's Inner Richmond neighborhood more than two years ago. The blast rocked Geary Blvd. at Parker Ave. on the afternoon of Feb. 6, 2019. A two-story building on the corner – site of Hong Kong Lounge II restaurant and residences on the second floor – was extensively damaged by a giant orange fireball that sent diners running for their lives. Sisters Cindy and Judy Chan were inside the restaurant celebrating Chinese New Year with their parents at the time, sitting right next to the fire when it erupted. "I heard popping sounds. I thought it was fire crackers because it's Chinese New Year," Cindy Chan told KPIX 5 at the time. Within seconds, all they could see was a bright orange glow surrounding the restaurant.
