VIDEOS/PHOTOS: The flooding of a major river in Juneau has left streets impassable, with water surrounding homes and buildings and some roads buried under several feet of water. Gov. Mike Dunleavy issued a disaster declaration shortly after noon on Tuesday, activating state disaster funds to be used in helping those impacted by the flooding. The governor said that "multiple homes and roads" are submerged by the water, but that no injuries have been reported. According to official records, the Mendenhall River crested at 15.99 feet early Tuesday morning, as historic flooding led to closures of several public facilities and power outages. Shortly following the crest of the river, the waters began to recede, with the latest observation pointing to flood waters dropping below moderate flood stage.  

The BLM Alaska Fire Service North Star Fire Crew will spend the last days of this week's warm spell in Interior Alaska pulling equipment from cabins and fire lines near the McDonald Fire (#119). This 18-member crew was shuttled from the BLM AFS helicopter base at Ladd Air Field on Tuesday. They will spend the next few days pulling water pumps, hose, sprinkler systems, and other equipment left in place for quick mobilization to protect the cabins from the fire burning in the Tanana Flats Training Area southwest of Fairbanks. The lightning-caused McDonald Fire started on June 8 and quickly grew to 750 acres as wind pushed the flames through black spruce trees on the training range. The fire burned in an area designated for limited management, meaning that unless the fire threatens property or people, it will be allowed to play its natural ecological role.  

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Four Layton Fire Department medics are recovering from serious injuries after their ambulance rolled in a crash. Layton city officials reported that the medical team was transporting an elderly patient to McKay Dee Hospital when they collided with an SUV at the intersection of 5600 South and Harrison Boulevard in South Ogden Monday. Although no one died, the incident highlights concerns about emergency vehicles and traffic, even as the cause remains under investigation. Jennifer Hunter of South Ogden expressed her worry upon hearing about the rollover near her home. "I just hope that they're going to be okay," she said. Video footage obtained by 2News shows the intense aftermath of the crash.  

VIDEO/PHOTOS: When the sunglasses worn by a firefighter kept getting destroyed, he chose to fight fire with fire. When Mike Ettenberg was a firefighter for the city of Coronado, sunglasses were the item he could wear that brought out his personality. But when the alarm rang and duty called, it was like those designer shades were meant to be scratched, cracked, broken, and lost. "The inside of the rig during a call is like a tornado. Things go flying everywhere, everything is made out of metal," said Mike. Although lives were saved during calls for service, oftentimes, Mike's sunglasses were not. "I broke about three of them in 9 months. It was expensive," said Mike. So, this man of action created his own sunglasses company and named it Frontline Optics.  

VIDEO: On Tuesday, the Gautier Fire Department celebrated the arrival of a brand new fire truck. The new truck, themed after the Gautier Gators, shows off community pride for the local school system. The color has reflective material in the stripes and many new lights. Officials with the fire department say the new truck just needs its radio and hoses attached and should be ready to get on the road next week.
