A 71-year-old man, known to be an avid runner, was carried off Kodiak's Pillar Mountain in an ambulance Sunday after a bear attack. Kodiak police say he was jogging on a trail in an open area near a gravel pit. He had a cell phone and was able to call for help, said Lt. Francis de la Fuente. The call came in at 11:35 a.m. Help arrived in about 15 minutes, but de la Fuente said it was difficult to reach the man. Guided by his voice, they hiked down a steep incline about a half mile from the road. "Luckily medics had a gurney with a big wheel, but had to be assisted, of course, by multiple people," de la Fuente said. The rescue team had to use a tow rope to pull the man up to an ambulance, which rushed him to Kodiak Providence Island Medical Center. "Everybody was exhausted," de la Fuente said, "but they did their job." De la Fuente said it's not clear what prompted the attack. Possibly, the runner surprised the bear or maybe it was defending a deer carcass or some other food.

This summer's pandemic-altered traffic configuration in downtown Hyannis has led the village Fire Department to adapt, too. And for now, at least, two wheels could be better than eight to ensure rapid emergency response in the downtown area. Last week, the department initiated bicycle patrols on Main, North and South streets and on Ocean Street near the harbor. Wearing bright, highly visible yellow shirts, the two-person team can respond to medical and other emergencies quicker and more nimbly, especially during peak periods and weekends. "There was always a thought of establishing one (a bike unit) for high-traffic areas of Hyannis, but COVID-19 really highlighted the need," Hyannis fire Capt. David Webb said. One lane on Main Street in Hyannis has been closed to traffic this summer to accommodate social distancing and provide additional space for restaurants and small businesses to offer services outside.

The first fallen Columbus Firefighter is finally receiving a headstone at his gravesite after 150 years. Mark B. Newman was a Columbus firefighter in the 1800s, he also worked as a police officer. Newman was recognized as the first Columbus firefighter to die in the line of duty more than a century ago. At the time of his death, Newman was given a proper burial and all. However, the funds raised were given to help the needs of his wife and children. Up until Tuesday, his burial site was unfinished. "Mark Newman is a special guy," said Chris Klein, a Columbus firefighter. "He was one of the first paid firemen to work for the paid steam department." It has been 150 years to the date Newman died while helping to put out a fire at the Columbus Woolen Factory when a wall collapsed on him.

The Elba Fire Department is now home to a $65,000 airboat. In December 2015, flood waters breached the dam and sent water rushing through the Pea River. Now, five years later, the river struggles to stay at 2.5 feet. This has led to people getting stuck and sometimes stranded while trying to enjoy a day on the water. But now, water-based rescue missions have gotten easier for the Elba Fire Department. "The only way we had to navigate the river was the same way that the folks using it for the recreation would be able to navigate it," said Elba Fire Department Chief Drew Parker. "That's either by jon boats, kayaks, or even inner tubes. Now that we have an airboat, we can navigate it somewhere between 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish."
