The Clearwater Lodge was destroyed by fire overnight according to Chief Tim Castleberry with the Rural Deltana Volunteer Fire Department. Castleberry said fire departments were dispatched shortly after 2 a.m. this morning to a report that the lodge was fully engulfed in fire. The first engine on the scene confirmed the building was a total loss upon arrival. The fire was reported by individuals camping in the adjacent campground. Crews from Rural Deltana, City of Delta Junction, and Fort Greely Fire Departments along with Delta Medical Transport responded to the call. Alaska State Troopers also responded and have requested the fire marshal's office to investigate the fire. The fire marshal is expected to be on scene later this morning. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

A house fire in Sitka claimed one life on Friday afternoon. Fire Chief Dave Miller said crews responded at 2:57 p.m. (9-21-20), after receiving calls about a mobile home that had caught fire at 147 Price Street. "The original call came in and said that there were flames showing out the windows," he said. "When we got around the area of the post office, we could see the smoke coming from it, so we knew it was a good fire." Firefighters arrived on the scene at 3:05, and began putting out the blaze. Miller said the flames were mostly confined to the living room and kitchen area, with the rest of the home sustaining smoke and heat damage. The fire was extinguished in about five minutes. Miller said it was only after the blaze was mostly contained that firefighters learned that there may be one occupant inside.

VIDEO: Fire crews are working to get a large fire under control at AAM Metal Forming/Colfor Manufacturing. The factory is on Alliance Rd. NW in Malvern. The fire broke out sometime early Tuesday morning. The Carroll County Sheriff's Office tells FOX 8 they have not had any reports of injuries. There is no word on what caused the fire. Due to concern about the smoke, Browns Local Schools has cancelled classes for the day. AAM is headquartered in Detroit and employs more than 21,000 people around the world. The district says the schools also have no water pressure.

VIDEO: With Tropical Storm Beta bashing the Gulf coast, first responders may get a chance to put some unique training to the test. Inside a warehouse near Austin, Rick Cummins trains the next generation of water rescuers at his Fathom Academy. Since it opened two and a half years ago, Cummins has trained about 300 first responders, with more than 90% of them from the Houston area. The goal is to put them in real-life flooding scenarios that we've seen in recent years, including Hurricane Harvey and Tropical Storm Imelda. "Most of the fatalities that occur in this type of rescue environment are not the victims," Cummins says. "They are the rescuers." When KPRC 2 visited Fathom Academy, the Montgomery County Precinct 5 team was there. Watch their training in the video above. Cummins also had tips for people who might find themselves stuck in high water and in need of rescue.

Manatee County officials are pushing for new and more efficient ways to be able to respond to emergencies. They are partnering with a private company to bring more eyes in the skies to not only solve crimes, but also save lives. "We're on the edge of something that would be very very beneficial to our community," said Jake Saur, the Public Safety Director for Manatee County. Manatee County would be the first area on the Suncoast to have this cutting-edge technology in place. The drone, created by Archer First Response Systems, would be the newest tool as part of Manatee County's Emergency Response – arriving to a scene while ambulances or first responders are on their way. "It has its own dispatch system that is constantly checking the weather and it's flight plan. It already knows all of the flight plans within that area that it can respond to," explained Saur.

Last Monday, when I called the cardiologist Amy Kontorovich in the late morning, she apologized for sounding tired. "I've been in my lab infecting heart cells with SARS-CoV-2 since 6 a.m. this morning," she said. That might seem like an odd experiment for a virus that spreads through the air, and primarily infects the lungs and airways. But SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus behind the COVID-19 pandemic, can also damage the heart. That much was clear in the early months of the pandemic, when some COVID-19 patients would be hospitalized with respiratory problems and die from heart failure. "Cardiologists have been thinking about this since March," said Kontorovich, who is based at Mount Sinai. "Data have been trickling in." Autopsies have found traces of the coronavirus's genetic material in the heart, and actual viral particles within the heart's muscle cells. Experiments have found that SARS-CoV-2 can destroy lab-grown versions of those cells.

A new device could help save lives. It's called, "The Locator." It helps first responders find the exact location of an emergency. Johnathan Harrison, founder of the product, was a paramedic in Tennessee in 2009. A new paramedic at the time, he responded to a call of a two-year-old in cardiac arrest in a mobile home park. When Harrison and his team arrived, there was no mailbox or driveway in sight. Unable to find the location, he began knocking on doors. But when he found the correct home, it was already too late. "After everything was said and done, it added four minutes to our response time to get to the child and the child didn't make it." Harrison says, four to six minutes can often be the difference between life and death. That's when he came up with the locator. Essentially, it's a porch light that blinks red white and blue when you call 9-1-1 through the locator app. It's used to help first responders easily identify the location of an emergency.
