Firefighters save Wasilla residents from burning homes over the weekend Firefighters in Wasilla had a busy weekend battling structure fires. Between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, crews from the West Lakes Fire Department and Central Fire Department battled three separate house fires, rescuing nearly a dozen people from their burning homes. West Lakes responded to a fire near Pittman Road on Saturday night to rescue one person trapped. A second fire on Knik-Goose Bay Road that was reported in an attic was able to be contained to the attic and a four-plex building with 10 people inside caught fire early Sunday morning. "Within two to three minutes of the initial call they still had people trapped and they had to put a ladder at the back window to help them get out and then the fire was in the entrance of the four-plex so they had to extinguish it quickly and then go in and assist the other people out. It was such thick dark smoke that the people couldn't see to get out on their own so the firefighters got in there and were able to do a quick attack and get them out and there were no injuries," said Mat-Su Borough Department of Emergency Services Director Ken Barkley. Dallas Firefighters Battle 5-Alarm Apartment Fire VIDEO: Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a large apartment fire at the Forest Cove Apartments, in the 9600 block of Forest Lane in Northeast Dallas Monday evening, March 29. Flames were shooting through the roof. The call came in around 5:30 p.m. as flames could be seen inside multiple apartment units. When firefighters arrived at the two-story apartment complex, they saw fire coming through the roof of one of the buildings. With the fire being in its advanced stages, it wasn't too long before a second alarm response was transmitted. A third alarm was transmitted for manpower, resulting in approximately 70-80 firefighters responding to the scene. By 6:20 p.m., it became a four-alarm fire and by 6:40 it was a five-alarm. Crews are still in the process of extinguishing the blaze, but due in part to a partial roof collapse, efforts have been mostly defensive. Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the crash between a Volusia County firetruck and a Chevy Tahoe happened on Ocean Shore Boulevard in Volusia County at 12:10 p.m. Troopers said the Tahoe was traveling northbound on Ocean Shore Blvd and the firetruck was traveling southbound. Witnesses told the Florida Highway Patrol that the driver of the Tahoe was driving in an aggressive and careless manner. The Tahoe crossed into the southbound lanes and struck the firetruck head-on. The driver of the Tahoe was airlifted to Halifax Hospital in critical condition. Troopers said three firefighters were also taken to a hospital to be checked out. The crash remains under investigation. WESH-TV NBC 2 ORLANDO Off-duty New Mexico firefighter comes to the rescue after a swarm of bees invade man's car VIDEO: Imagine going to the grocery store, parking your car, getting your shopping done, checking out, loading your groceries and you're about to drive away and then BAM… there's a swarm of bees in your backseat. That's what happened to a Las Cruces man this weekend. According to a post on the Las Cruces Fire Department's Facebook page, firefighters were called out to a local Albertson's grocery store after the man found a swarm of bees had taken up temporary residence in his backseat. The man said he was about to drive off when he realized his backseat had been taken over. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they first blocked off the area to protect nearby shoppers before calling in Jesse Johnson. Johnson was not working that day but in his spare time, works as a beekeeper. Johnson arrived on the scene equipped with a hive kit, lemongrass oil, gloves and proper attire and was able to safely relocate the swarm. KOAT-TV ABC 7 ALBUQUERQUE The history of lady lookouts In a year when so many of us have struggled with feeling isolated in our homes or apartments, living alone in a 14-by-14-foot cabin perched thousands of feet above the wilderness might not sound enticing. For more than a century, though, across the United States, a few intrepid Americans have sought out those remote towers as not just a job, but a lifestyle. And unlike so many jobs that were long considered "man's work," women broke the glass ceiling of fire lookout positions almost as soon as the job was established. "Women have earned their place in the history of forest fire lookouts," says Dixie Boyle, a longtime lookout and author going into her 34th season. Before American women were granted the right to vote or allowed to have bank accounts in their name, they were trekking into forests alone, manning lookout stations, and helping to save millions of acres of wilderness from wildfires across the country. SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE Large Study Confirms COVID Vaccines Are Working in the U.S., Reducing Risk of Infection by 90% Pfizer and Moderna's vaccines are "highly effective" at reducing the risk of infection from COVID-19, according to the first large study of how Americans who have received a vaccine have fared in the U.S. outside of a clinical trial. In a Centers for Disease Control study of just under 4,000 heath care workers, police, firefighters and other essential workers who received one of the two mRNA vaccines between Dec. 14 and March 13, the risk of infection went down by 90% two weeks or more after they received their second dose. Even the first dose alone provided significant protection, reducing the risk of infection by 80% two weeks after inoculation. The study results are confirmation that the vaccines are effective against COVID-19 and provide optimism that as more Americans get vaccinated, the pandemic will end. PEOPLE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
