Worsening wildfires spark changes to Alaska state forestry division At its start, the Alaska Division of Forestry focused in large part on managing forests for the state's timber industry. Firefighting was a secondary focus. But now, over 90% of the division's budget goes toward fighting fires. And with the frequency and severity of wildland fires only expected to increase, officials say the division needs to further build up its capacity to ready for conditions ahead. Gov. Mike Dunleavy introduced an executive order this week to change the name of the department from the Alaska Division of Forestry to the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection. He also requested money in his budget for an additional 30 positions. Division spokesperson Tim Mowry said it's time for the division to catch up with the ever-increasing need for fire management. Officials: 3 firefighters dead, one in critical condition following rowhome fire in Maryland Three firefighters were killed and one critically injured from a partial building collapse while battling a fire in a vacant rowhome in west Baltimore early Monday, officials said. In a news conference held by Mayor Brandon Scott and the Baltimore City Fire Department, Scott released the names of the victims from the early morning rowhome fire. "Today, Baltimore has lost three of the bravest among us: Lt Paul Butrim, firefighter/paramedic Kelsey Sadler and EMT/firefighter Kenny Lacayo," Scott said. "All made the ultimate sacrifice. For that, Baltimore owes them the deepest gratitude and respect. A fourth EMT/firefighter John McMaster remains at the hospital in critical but stable condition." Baltimore City Fire Department Chief Niles R. Ford honored the bravery of his first responders and firefighters. WBAL-AM 1090 BALTIMORE Massive fire at New Jersey recycling center; smoke smelled as far away as New York City VIDEO: After a massive fire broke out at a Newark recycling center early Tuesday, smoke could be smelled as far away as Manhattan and the Bronx, officials said. AIR11 was over the scene Tuesday just after 6 a.m. as two large piles of metal burned at the Eastern Metal Recycling Terminal, located in the Port Newark area of the city. Heavy clouds of smoke were seen drifting toward the northeast, in the direction of Jersey City and New York City. "Due to emergency personnel operating at a fire in Newark, New Jersey, residents in Manhattan and the Bronx may see or smell smoke," NYC's Office of Emergency Management tweeted at 5:15 a.m. It was not immediately clear when the fire started. No injuries had been reported due to the blaze. WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK Texas fire department takes extra safety measures with new portable speed bump VIDEO: A local fire department is taking extra measures to keep crews safe while on the job. The new equipment? A portable speed bump. When first responders are on the scene of a crash or at a fire, they're already putting their lives in danger. So Whitesboro wanted to curb the risk of a distracted driver adding to that threat. "Firefighter safety is one of our big pushes here in the department now whether it be a structure fire or a car accident," said Whitesboro Fire Chief Steve Pinkston. Pinkston started volunteering with the fire department in 1985. He's seen just about every fire and emergency scenario, but says what he worries about most: "We've noticed lately the more traffic we're having on 82 and 377 that we're having drivers really occupied with what they're doing, not watching emergency scenes," said Pinkston. KXII-TV CBS/FOX 12 SHERMAN 14 New Mexico firefighter/EMTs give two weeks' notice over pay Social media blew up over the weekend with support for 14 Deming firefighters/EMTs who surprised city officials on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, with tendering their two weeks' notice at the John Strand Municipal Building, 309 S. Gold St. The 14 city employees cited low pay as the reason for tendering their resignations. A flood of social media posts began to appear on Facebook, with concerns of whether the city would be able to provide emergency services with nearly half of the Deming Fire Department personnel depleted. City Administrator Aaron Sera was at the Legislative Session in Santa Fe on Friday and is scheduled to meet with Union 4251 representatives at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at City Hall. Sera was the target of the social media blitz over the weekend despite his claims to have worked on behalf of the Deming Fire Department for better pay. DEMING HEADLIGHT North Carolina volunteer firefighter transforms lives and fire hoses through business A volunteer firefighter hopes to transform fire hoses and lives through her bag-making business. Janelle Robinson discovered a passion for firefighting and a desire to join its tight-knit community when she turned 40. She became a volunteer firefighter and EMT with Summerfield Fire District, and her new career led to an adventure in the business world. "We got a whole bunch of new hose one year, and a lot of it was going to get thrown away. I asked my chief if I could take some of it home and try to make something out of it," Robinson said. That experiment became Burn Bags USA. The business features different styles of bags made out of old fire hoses. Through it, she found an opportunity to help women put out the fires in their own lives. Women from Tabitha Ministry, a local recovery program, help her get bags out the door.
