Firefighters found human remains inside of a home that caught fire in Willow this week. Alaska State Troopers and firefighters with the Willow Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire on West Stinson Road around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after bystanders called it in, according to an online dispatch report. The remains were found just over two hours later. Spokesperson Austin McDaniel said the human remains are believed to belong to one person, who is also believed to be the only person that was inside of the home at the time of the fire. No other injuries were reported. The person's cause and manner of death are under investigation, he said, and their identity will be released after the person's family is notified. The home was described as a "total loss," according to the dispatch. The cause of the fire is under investigation, troopers said. KTUU-TV NBC 2 ANCHORAGE |

Corvette fans, you might want to look away for this one. Videos shared early on Wednesday by Corieblue Fickes to Facebook show what looks to be a truckload of newly built C8-generation Chevrolet Corvettes going up in flames in a parking lot roughly 30 minutes north of Nashville, Tennessee—about an hour and a half south of the car's Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant. By the time the first video starts, half the trailer is already engulfed in fire, with at least one Corvette totally charred. In the second video, firefighters can be seen attempting to extinguish the flames. Both videos can be seen below (mind the explicit language). Corvette Blogger, which first discovered the videos via the C8 Corvette Owners Group on Facebook, says the transport truck seen in the above clips can carry up to 10 Corvettes at a time. ROAD AND TRACK A cliff rescue resulted in a surprise for firefighters in Santa Barbara on Monday. Crews were dispatched to Hope Ranch Beach around 4 p.m. after receiving reports of a person stuck on a cliff about 30 feet down. After arriving with UTV's, a drone, fire engines and a truck, firefighters discovered the "person" in need was a hanging mannequin. Crews shared the above image showing no body heat coming from the doll. The mannequin was reportedly left on the cliff from a movie shoot days earlier. Passersby saw the figure and thought it was someone in need, so they called for help. The Santa Barbara County Fire Department said it's better to call than not! KEYT-TV ABC 3 SANTA BARBARA A father and son firefighting team in Hermon was honored Wednesday before they head overseas for deployment. The Hermon Fire Department presented Eric and Noah Campbell with the Blue Star Flag. It's given to military members serving overseas. Eric had been set to retire from the department, but getting the opportunity to work directly with his son changed his mind. They're heading to Southwest Asia with the Maine Air National Guard, where they will respond to medical, structural and aircraft emergencies. They say it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. "It's going to be his last one and my first one, so it's really just going to be a great experience to spend with him," said Senior Airman Noah Campbell, of the Maine Air National Guard. "Father and son, we've grown up together all these years, so being able to do such a big job with him is going to be pretty special." WABI-TV CBS/CW+ 5 BANGOR Local firefighters will be showing off their colorful side this month, with unique pink ribbon badges adorning their helmet fronts. Pink ribbons are a universal symbol of breast cancer prevention and support and typically worn during Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October. Deputy Fire Chief Paul Wilson said the decision to go with pink helmet badges was made to show support and solidarity for the cause. "We are hopeful to build more camaraderie within the membership as we stand to bring awareness throughout the month," he said. Wilson proposed the idea and designed the fronts that the community will come to know for the remainder of the month. "Many of our members have been impacted by this disease at one time or another," Wilson said. Fire Chief Francis T. Jones III said the department and its members show support for many causes throughout the year. SHELTON HERALD October typically marks the beginning of the flu season and it's coming with new warnings of a possible "twindemic" of COVID-19 and influenza. The United States and much of the world got a welcome break from the flu last year with fewer cases than any time in recent history. The coronavirus was spreading fast but pandemic mitigation measures like masking, social distancing and people going to school and working remotely left few opportunities for the flu virus to spread. The U.S. may not likely be so lucky this year. According to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences projections, there could be up to 20% more flu cases than a normal year, with the potential to see nearly twice the typical caseload. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate average annual flu cases are between 9 million and 45 million cases with 12,000 to 52,000 deaths. KUTV CBS 2 SALT LAKE CITY |
