| None hurt as pickup truck explodes, catches fire in downtown Juneau A pickup truck exploded in downtown Juneau Monday night, but the Juneau Police Department does not believe the fire was suspicious or a crime. A witness says it sounded like a fireworks factory exploding. "They make this kind of shish-shish-shish-shish-shish sound that sounds just like rockets shooting up into the air repeatedly," says Noah Williams. "And then, I just saw this big fire away from my house." Williams says he called 911 from his home near Cope Park and then grabbed his camera and ran to F Street, across from the laundromat and the old Bill Ray Center. "I was a little scared running into that general area. But they seemed to have it mostly under control by the time I got there," Williams says. "So, props to CCF/R! You guys rock!" Firefighters were already putting out the fire. There were also filled propane tanks in the back in the pickup truck that firefighters were trying to keep from exploding. | In meeting with Biden, emergency workers plead for equipment, testing to combat 'skyrocketing' coronavirus cases As President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office in two months, he heard Wednesday from a firefighter, nurses and a caregiver who described chronic shortages of protective equipment, tests and contact tracing to combat the coronavirus pandemic. The virus, combined with rebuilding the economy, is the biggest challenge facing Biden. The online roundtable came as the number of cases nationwide grows rapidly, with more than 11 million cases nationwide and nearly 250,000 deaths so far. Mary Turner, an intensive-care nurse who is president of Minnesota Nurses Association, began crying as she described holding the hand of a dying patient or caring for a colleague who had fallen ill. She said earlier in the pandemic, nurses were using single-use masks for 10 shifts. While caring for COVID-19 patients since February, Turner said she still hasn't been tested. "You're kidding me," Biden said during the roundtable from The Queen theater in Wilmington, Delaware. THE DAILY JOURNAL 4 People Injured, 4 Apartments Destroyed In New York fire VIDEO: A raging fire in Queens forced families out of their homes Wednesday night as temperatures fell below freezing for the first time since last winter. The fire started around 8 p.m. at a seven-story building on New Haven Avenue and Beach 22nd Street in Far Rockaway. CBS2's Cory James reports it took about 100 firefighters two hours to get the blaze under control. Those flames quickly tore through the building, destroying four apartments and injuring four people. CBS2 has been told their injuries are not life-threatening, and only two of those injured had to be rescued from the building. Crews were still searching the building and assessing the damage late Wednesday night. Dozens of people were forced to evacuate. WLNY-TV CBS 55 RIVERHEAD Maine: Town's 83-year-old fire truck still going strong Hiram's fire chief Bruce Pyburn is proud to show off the town's first fire truck. "This is the original lettering, all gold leaf, original hoses, original ladder," Pyburn said. "It's a '37 Dodge that has been with the department since day one." The truck was purchased in 1937, the same year the Hiram Fire Department was started. "We have all the paperwork upstairs when it was first ordered," Pyburn said. That includes the truck's original bill of sale. It was bought for the price of $3,400. Also, preserved on film, is Hiram's first firefighters in action, using their new truck for training. "Some of these old photographs of these guys on these trucks and the equipment and what they were wearing. God love them what they were able to do with what they had at the time," Pyburn said. The town's first fire truck ran calls until 1983. "It was a working fire truck for 50 years, so pretty cool." WTHR-TV NBC 13 INDIANAPOLIS Wisconsin fire department celebrates 100 years The Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department is celebrating 100 years of full-time service to the community. The city of Wisconsin Rapids was developed as a consolidation of Grand Rapids, which sat on the east side of the Wisconsin River and Centralia, which was situated in the west side. The two municipalities combined in the spring of 1900 and bore the name of Grand Rapids, until the name was changed to Wisconsin Rapids to correct and freight/mail confusion with Grand Rapids, MI. In 1910, the police and fire departments began operating under a five-member commissioner system. The present full-time, paid fire department was organized in October 1920, with A. C. Miller as the chief. By his side was a six-member fire department. WISCONSIN RAPIDS CITY TIMES U.S. Representative calls for reversal of rule allowing natural gas ‘bomb trains' in New York county Rep. Joe Morelle is calling on a federal agency to reverse a new rule that allows railroad tankers carrying liquefied natural gas to roll through Monroe County. The rule went into effect on Aug. 24, though it faces several legal challenges. It allows trains to carry up to 100 tankers of liquefied gas on American railroads, as long as the gas is stored in a specifically-designed tanker whose safety as a container for the gas has been largely untested. "This dangerous gas would pass directly through my district in Upstate New York's Monroe County, and pose a threat to the citizens living there as well as the environment and our first responders," Morelle wrote in a Nov. 13 letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Roger Batory, administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration.
