Firefighters continue working to stamp out two human-caused wildfires burning in southwest Alaska, one near the coastal village of Pilot Point on the Alaska Peninsula and one near the village of Akiachak along the Kuskokwim River. Twelve smokejumpers from the BLM Alaska Fire Service spent Tuesday working to contain the estimated 180-acre Kiktak Island Fire (#112) near the village of Akiachak on the Kuskokwim River, about 13 miles northeast of Bethel. The fire is burning along the south bank of a slough of the Kuskokwim River, about 2 miles south of Akiachak. The fire destroyed multiple structures in a fish camp along the slough prior to the arrival of the smokejumpers. The fire started on Monday night and local residents at the fish camp tried to put it out but it flared up on Tuesday and smokejumpers were called in. AK FIRE INFO |

VIDEO: An off-duty Rochester firefighter came to the rescue during a recent boat fire – using an unconventional means to help extinguish it. Rochester firefighters' union IAFF107 says firefighter Oscar Herrera stepped in to help fight the fire on May 20 at Mayer's Marina on Irondequoit Bay. Video captured him using his jet ski to help get the fire under control. "I saw it. Naturally I wanted to see what was going on so I went over and there were a couple of other jet skis basically staring at it and I thought, 'What can I do to help?' And I'd seen it on YouTube a couple of times so I wanted to try it myself," Herrera said. Herrera says he did some maneuvers to create a big wake to throw water on the flames. It was a first for him, but because it worked so well, it may not be his last mission. Herrera works at Engine 10 at Dewey and Ridgeway avenues. WHAM-TV ABC/CW 13 ROCHESTER Anyone having a heart attack at the nation's busiest airport should be prepared to wait. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's average response time in 2020, from the 911 center receiving a medical call to the first unit reporting on scene, was 11 minutes and 48 seconds. Even if a 911 operator at the airport knows CPR or has previous medical training, they are prohibited from giving life-saving instructions to 911 callers. "They're not trained to provide CPR instructions over the phone," Airport 911 Director Augustus Hudson said. Neighboring 911 centers and major airports across the nation, Like DFW in Dallas, have access to emergency medical dispatchers and provide pre-arrival instructions over the phone during medical calls. The Atlanta airport's 911 center does not. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA Dozens of people are displaced and five buildings were damaged Wednesday when a seven-alarm fire spread through a Dorchester neighborhood. The fire was reported at about 11:15 a.m. on Fayston Street. From Sky 5, heavy, black smoke could be seen coming from at least three triple-deckers -- Nos. 86, 84 and 82 Fayston -- at the corner with Mascoma Street. The fire also caused minor damage to structures on Mascoma and Quincy streets. "I woke up to people saying, ‘Fire, fire fire,' and I looked out the back and there was this big flame of fire coming up to the second floor and I just ran out," one resident said. Commissioner Jack Dempsey said the heat was an issue battling the fire, and three firefighters and one civilian were taken to the hospital for evaluation. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON VIDEO: Eleven-year-old year old Brady Young thrives on structure. From Cub Scout to Boy Scout, Brady said the principles he's learned have helped shape him. Always be, "trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, irreverent," recalls Brady who made sure to add, "I feel like I'm all of those. I do a pretty good job at that." But one other rule he lives by is what has his Port St. Lucie community talking. "Treat others as you want to be treated," said Brady. He took those words to heart at a young age, participating in various scout events, school initiatives, and backpack food drives for hungry students. Even his principal at Morningside Elementary, Kathleen Melrose, has taken notice and says she's not really surprised anymore. WPTV NBC 5 WEST PALM BEACH Members of the Farmington Hills police and fire departments, along with officers from the Farmington Public Safety Department, received cardiac health screening tests as part of the Hearts for Heroes program back in December. Created by Dr. Justin Trivax and Dr. Herman Kado, Farmington Hills interventional cardiologists, the Hearts for Heroes program grew from an idea that originated with Trivax's high school daughters, Tessa and Sienna. The girls learned about a local police officer who suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty, and they asked their dad to help. The duo created the Hearts for Heroes program and reached out to several local police and fire departments. A total of 57 police officers and firefighters received coronary artery calcium scoring tests. C & G NEWSPAPERS |
