In Chevak, two men are missing and a third of the community is without water and sewer. The events follow a fire that burned down the old Chevak school on March 8. The men, both in their 20s, were discovered missing the same day as the fire. "Both families on both sides have been looking all over," Chevak Vice Mayor Ulrich Ulroan said. Search and rescue volunteers organized a ground search. "Searched all over, checked everyone's houses, looked all over town, came up with nothing," Ulroan said. The men were in Chevak before the fire began, and there are no signs of either man having traveled recently. Chevak and nearby communities require permission from travelers to enter their communities during the pandemic. No communities received a travel request from either of them. It's unknown if the men perished in the fire.

PHOTOS: An historic Kentucky landmark has been destroyed by fire. According to a Facebook post by the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the Mt. Zion bridge was consumed by flames around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. The 280 foot long bridge, which spanned spans the Little Beech Fork, was built in 1871 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The fire remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Washington County Sheriff Jerry Pinkston.

VIDEO: This year has been incredibly stressful for all of us, but our first responders have bravely and selflessly led the way. On Wednesday, one of our frontline heroes got the healing opportunity to make music on a legendary piano. It's something a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Princeton hasn't done since the pandemic began. "I can sort of have in the back of my mind just the incredible places that this piano has been and the folks who have played on it," says Lee Sandberg, a volunteer firefighter for the Princeton Fire Department and an EMT for the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad. "I mean, it really is just a dream come true." The Steinway piano was handpicked and signed by legendary pianist Yuja Wang and has been used in iconic venues including Carnegie Hall. "To have an idol that you respect and are completely in awe of, and to be able to use that piano yourself, it really is kind of a humbling experience," Sandberg says.

VIDEO: Fire Station 13 sits in the shadow of SheiKra, the towering roller coaster at Busch Gardens. The station gets more calls for service than anywhere else in Tampa. It's so busy city councilman Luis Vera says it's earned the nickname 'Nightmare on Annie Street' because if you work here, don't plan on getting much sleep. "It's a running joke, but the truth is they shouldn't have Freddy Kruger as their mascot because people know that if you work here, you are going to be overworked," said Viera. Station 13 is actually one of the busiest fire stations in the nation with more than 10,000 service calls a year. It also covers a lot of ground. "It's way too much. You are talking about the communities off Fowler Avenue, the University area, Busch Boulevard. Sulpher Springs, etc.," said Viera. And up until now, the firefighters here only had one engine to work with. Now they have another one that will help with the workload.

The results of a new survey conducted by the Illinois Public Pension Fund Association (IPPFA) indicate the majority of Illinois firefighting and law enforcement professionals continue working in a variety of professions after retiring from their first responder jobs. Firefighters and law enforcement officers typically retire at a younger age due to the demands of the occupation than those in other lines of work. The IPPFA survey, conducted during the fall and winter of 2020, measured how many of these public safety employees work following their police or fire retirements, the types of jobs the retirees take, and how satisfied they are with their post-retirement employment. "This is the first in-depth survey of what these first responders do after retiring from their primary careers, which is important because they usually have more years to work after retirement than workers in other professions," said IPPFA President James McNamee.

Public safety agencies are one of the fastest-growing adopters of unmanned aircraft systems technology. Utilizing UAS provides opportunities and advantages to law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency management personnel, but knowing where to start in developing a UAS operation can be complicated. Kansas State Polytechnic is offering a free webinar and live question and answer session from noon to 1 p.m. CDT Thursday, April 15, to provide guidance to public safety and emergency management organizations on how to start a UAS operation. The free webinar will cover identifying a need, budgeting, technology decisions, training and legal considerations. Law enforcement officials currently managing a UAS operation will also join the webinar to discuss lessons learned, including how to gain leadership and community buy-in, and identifying funding sources. Kansas State Polytechnic UAS experts will be available to answer questions.
