Haystack fire near Fairbanks grows to over 500 acres, additional crews requested The Alaska Division of Forestry (DOF) is fighting a fire north of Fairbanks called the Haystack Fire. The blaze started Monday afternoon and originally was only around 5 acres. The fire has since grown to over 500 acres. "Right now they are using heavy equipment, bulldozers, to sort of build containment line around that heel of the fire, so there is... really lessens the chance of that moving closer to the subdivision" said Tim Mowry, a public information officer for the DOF. When the fire first started aircraft responded to drop water and retardant. Monday night they had a control line and the fire was around 5 acres. "Tuesday morning everything seemed to be going well and then it jumped across a control line somehow and just sort of got into some black spruce and took off to the north," Mowry said. Large fire burns at vehicle recycling business in South Carolina VIDEO: Firefighters are battling a large fire which broke out Wednesday afternoon at a Cherokee County vehicle recycling facility. The fire happened at Carguts just off Highway 5 near US-29 just east of Blacksburg. No injuries have been reported in the fire but one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. It is not known what caused the fire. Crews are also checking air quality in the area. Ten different fire agencies have responded to the scene with water tankers also being brought in to help. The Town of Blacksburg said water customers may experience low or no water pressure due to the large amount of water being used to extinguish the fire. WSPA-TV CBS 7 SPARTANBURG Fire Department Running Out Of Time To Save ‘Spirit Of Oklahoma' Fire Truck VIDEO: Thursday is the deadline to save the Spirit of Oklahoma fire truck. While the fundraiser is still thousands of dollars short, there is new, last-minute hope that the truck will be rescued. The truck symbolizes a bond between New York and Oklahoma firefighters after two terror attacks. If the Calera Fire Department can't come up with the money in time, a museum may step in to front the rest of the money, but there are no guarantees. The first page of the Spirit of Oklahoma fire truck's story was written 26 years ago - with the blood and tears shed by Oklahoma and New York City fire rescue crews in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City Bombing. Years later, a new chapter was written in the ashes of the September 11th attacks. KWTV-DT CBS 9 OKLAHOMA CITY 11-year-old raises $112K to buy CPR devices for four Michigan fire departments PHOTOS: Two years after creating a business plan with marker and construction paper, 11-year-old Lucas Vetter has raised $112,000 to purchase life-saving CPR machines for local fire departments. When Lucas was 9 years old, he visited Howell Area Fire Department with his family, which is where he first saw the LUCAS CPR device. LUCAS, which stands for Lund University Cardiac Assist System, is a machine that provides automatic chest compressions to a patient. The machines prevent strain on first responders and keep their hands free to help more people. Each device costs roughly $16,000, which is a barrier for smaller fire departments. "The lieutenant showed me the LUCAS device and told me how much they helped and how much they cost," Lucas said. "Then I thought, what if I could help get that for them?" LIVINGSTON DAILY Chief: Indiana apartment fire highlights weakness in building codes VIDEO: Fire officials say a massive apartment fire two months ago in Greenwood highlighted a weakness in Indiana building codes that they would like to see changed. The fire displaced 59 residents during the overnight hours and resulted in injuries to one civilian and one firefighter. Investigators determined the April 14 fire at the Meridian Oaks apartment originated on an outdoor, second floor balcony. While the exact cause is not known, it's believed that some kind of human error, possibly a cigarette butt or other discarded material, ignited the wooden balcony before the flames spread to vinyl siding on the building's exterior wall. "It went right up the vinyl siding," said White River Township Fire Chief, Jeremy Pell. "Behind that is a Styrofoam insulation, and from there it went into the attic. Fire grows more quickly if it has better fuel and vinyl siding and Styrofoam board is great fuel." Pell said the construction of the building was in line with Indiana building codes. WXIN-TV FOX 59 INDIANAPOLIS 7 years ago, rare twin tornadoes ripped apart Nebraska town VIDEO: Rare twin tornadoes barreled through the northeast Nebraska town of Pilger seven years ago today, killing two people, injuring 20 more and forever changing the lives of the nearly 350 people who called the town home. Pilger, a Stanton County village, is 80 miles northwest of Omaha. The storm destroyed or heavily damaged an estimated three-fourths of Pilger, including the middle school, Midwest Bank, the co-op, a convenience store, the post office, numerous houses, city hall, the firehouse and St. John Lutheran Church. The National Weather Service rated the larger tornado that tore through Pilger an EF4, capable of causing devastating damage with winds of 166 to 200 mph. The parallel twister was an EF2. Two deaths were attributed to the tornadoes. Calista Dixon, 5, died after suffering injuries inside a mobile home on Main Street in Pilger. LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
