At Midpoint of Fire Season, Agencies Consider Returning, Loaning Resources to Lower 48 Cool, rainy weather has kept this year's fire season fairly quiet. And as the midpoint of this year's fire season approaches, state and federal firefighting officials anticipate that weather pattern is likely to continue. Which means they'll probably soon be sending back firefighters and equipment that've been on loan from agencies in the Lower 48. Firefighters call July 10th the annual "conversion date," when agency officials decide whether to return personnel and equipment that've been loaned by firefighting agencies in the Lower 48. And whether to cut back on resources assigned to fires burning in remote areas around Alaska. But because the weather here has turned cool and rainy, the federal Alaska Fire Service has already returned most of those borrowed resources. KUAC-FM 89.9 'Wildfire evacuation notices come with next to no notice': How you should prepare Last year, Alaska had more acres burned by wildfires than any other state in the nation. Although we are well into fire season this year and not seeing the same amount of damage, it's always important to have a plan prepared to protect yourself and others from fire danger. According to Ethan DeBauche with the Alaska division of Forestry, Alaska has seen 293 fires burn about 173,000 acres in 2020, with 121 of those fires caused by humans and the remainder caused by lightning. "The best way to prepare for a wildfire is to create what we call defensible space around your property, the most basic step is to remove any spruce trees or any dead, flammable material within 15 feet of structures," DeBauche says, Wildfire evacuation notices come with next to no notice. So we recommend that people have what we call the 5 P's- those are people, prescription, priceless items, papers and personal needs. And have those ready to go within 5 minutes." Florida firefighters forced to use sick, personal time to self-isolate due to COVID-19 Frustration continues for a group of Central Florida firefighters being forced to use personal time to self-isolate. This follows a weekend of positive coronavirus tests among some of the Reedy Creek firefighters. The firefighter WESH 2's Bob Hazen spoke to says he worries he's going to run out of sick days soon. Mike Grant said his fellow firefighters will be facing a much higher risk of exposure in a few days as Disney continues reopening parks. Grant is with the Reedy Creek Improvement District which responds to calls at Disney. He's now in quarantine at home after testing positive for COVID-19 "Started getting dizzy, started getting headaches, I have joint pain in my knees that is unbearable," Grant said. He and three other firefighters started having symptoms last week. WESH-TV NBC 2 ORLANDO Vandals cut down flagpole at 9/11 memorial for fallen firefighters in New York PHOTOS: Village police are asking the public for help in finding the vandals who cut down a flagpole at the center of a 9/11 memorial that honors five firefighters from the area who died in the World Trade Center collapse. The severed pole was discovered and reported early Wednesday morning. Washingtonville Police Chief Brian Zaccaro said the culprits used a tool to cut through the composite material at about four to five feet from the base, and scrawled a message in marker on the part of the pole that remained standing. He didn't want to disclose the message while the investigation was getting started. Police suspect the same vandals also pushed over and damaged the sign for St. Mary's Parish Center, about a half mile away. An eagle figure that had been removed from the top of the cut-down flagpole was left next to the toppled church sign. TIMES HERALD-RECORD $300M in hazard pay made available for Michigan first responders Michigan Treasurer Rachael Eubanks on Wednesday announced two new grant programs offering a total of $300 million in hazard pay to first responders for working during the coronavirus pandemic. The First Responder Hazard Pay Premiums and the Public Safety and Public Health Pay Roll Reimbursement programs are aimed at helping first responders receive premium hazard pay and reimbursing local governments for payroll costs incurred due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a July 8 state news release. The money comes from federal coronavirus relief funds appropriated by the state July 1. "Our first responders and those public employees on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic are performing a critical public service for all Michiganders," Eubanks said. "Supporting our first responders with funding is vital to keep Michigan safe. These dollars will also help our communities receive some budget relief." MLIVE.COM Symptoms not enough for 911 COVID-19 screening, study finds Screening based on conventional COVID-19 symptoms may not be sensitive enough to identify which 911 patients should be tested for infection, a retrospective cohort study published today in JAMA Network Open found. In the study, researchers in Seattle evaluated data from surveillance systems and the electronic medical records of 124 patients with COVID-19 seeking 911 emergency medical services (EMS) in King County, Washington, from Feb 1 to Mar 18. Most 911 calls were classified by dispatchers as illness of unknown origin (41 of 147 encounters [28%]), difficulty breathing (25%), trauma (15%), and infectious disease (12.9%). But in 91 dispatches (62%), patients didn't report any of these issues. CENTER FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASE RESEARCH AND POLICY Massachusetts firefighters, resident restore Smokey, a 1935 antique pumper truck PHOTOS: Smokey, a 1935 Ford pumper truck, is back on the road thanks to Easton fire Lt. Jason Healey and resident Chuck Hurley. Smokey began its career as an Easton fire engine. During the 1970s, it was used as a brush truck and then for school visits and parades. "It was sitting in the back bay of the fire station for a long time, broken and collecting dust," Fire Chief Kevin Partridge said. When Healey joined the Easton Fire Department five years ago he spotted Smokey in back of Station 1 on Lothrup Street. Healey has family in Kansas and Missouri who have a love for restoring antique cars. Family members in Kansas have cars from 1903 to 1925 which they would drive in parades and other events, he said. "Growing up with antique cars I love them," he said. Healey wanted to restore Smokey and get the pumper truck back out in the community. WICKED LOCAL EASTON - METERED SITE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
