Close call prompts Houston Fire Department to remind Alaskans to check chimney VIDEO: The Houston Fire Department wants to remind Alaskans to check their chimney after a homeowner had a close call. The homeowner called Houston Fire Department Tuesday night after they heard a rattling from their chimney and saw embers coming from the top of their chimney. No one was hurt and the fire was limited to the top of the stack area. It was put out by firefighters and everyone was able to return home. In extremely cold weather, smoke cools quickly, causing creosote to build up. "The build-up in this situation, there was less than two months of build-up, and it restricted it to less than 10 percent of the opening was still.," said Christian Hartley, fire chief of the Houston Fire Department. "So what was happening was that it was so built up in there, the fireplace finally ignited in the chimney, in the stack." KTUU-TV NBC 2 ANCHORAGE PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

City, firefighters union in New York to talk for first time in years For the first time in a least four years, the city of Watertown has set dates to sit down with its fire union to negotiate a contract. In two weeks, Watertown city officials will be doing something they haven't done in a long time - negotiating a contract with the city fire union. "I think it's long over due. My hope is that we let the past be in the past. This is a new council, so hopefully this can be a new day for this relationship between the city and the fire department," said Watertown City Council Member Ryan Henry-Wilkinson. City council discussed the next steps in establishing a contract in executive session on Monday. "It's something that the new council doesn't want to sit back and management doesn't want to sit back and let linger. We just want to address this head on and move forward," said Mayor Jeff Smith. WWNY-TV CBS 7 CARTHAGE Maryland county fire and rescue rolls out 'cold response' Next time you call 911, you may not see red lights or hear sirens when fire and rescue personnel get to you and once they're there, you might not be taken to a hospital. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services says it's no cause for concern, MCFRS says what's called a "cold response" can be safer for EMS personnel, community members and patients. It means emergency vehicles won't push other drivers out of the way to get where you are for certain kinds of calls. In addition, with the new alternative destination program, you might end up at a qualified urgent care facility instead of a hospital if your emergency isn't critical. Pete Piringer, spokesperson for MCFRS, said, "If a patient meets certain criteria, we're able to take them to an urgent care facility. It's usually more efficient for the patient in time and money and insurance." WDVM-TV 25 HAGERSTOWN California Artist Honors Firefighters Through Glass Window Art In her more than 30 years as an artist, Anne-Elizabeth Sobieski has created countless masterpieces. But nothing has sparked more excitement than the collection she recently created on a series of glass windows, commissioned as a civic work by the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture. "I had never painted on glass before but I can use my own drawing underneath as a guide. It's a really forgiving process," said Sobieski, demonstrating the process. The windows won't be going up in a museum or gallery. They were specially designed by Sobieski for Fire Station 104, currently under construction in Santa Clarita. The theme, of course, was fire. To create the windows, Sobieski was given the chance to learn a new artistic technique called glass fusing. SPECTRUM NEWS 1 Black Dog Salvage saves historic artifacts from Virginia fire station Construction is well underway on the new Roanoke Fire Station No. 7. But before crews took hammers and excavators to tear down the old building, the fire department teamed up with Black Dog Salvage to save historic pieces of the old structure. The old station was built in 1922 and due to land issues, it had to be torn down in order to build a new station that would meet all the department's needs. Because that building meant so much to the community, Black Dog Salvage offered to help out and filmed it all for a "Salvage Dawgs" episode. In July, crews brought in their gear and managed to save things like poles, woodwork, doors and brass furnishings. Fire Chief David Hoback said the best part is that all of those historic artifacts will be incorporated into the design of the new station. WSLS-TV NBC 10 ROANOKE Wisconsin Senate committee advances bill to regulate firefighting foam, rejects further limits on PFAS Republicans in the state Senate advanced a bill Wednesday to restrict the use of firefighting foam containing certain PFAS compounds but rejected a Democratic proposal to expand regulation of the synthetic chemicals that have been found in drinking water throughout the state. The Senate's GOP-led natural resources committee voted 3-2 along party lines to approve the bill, authored by Sen. Robert Cowles, R-Green Bay, that limits where firefighters and others could test or train with foams containing highly fluorinated compounds. It would allow the use of such foam only in emergency fire response or in testing areas that the Department of Natural Resources determines have "appropriate containment, treatment, and disposal measures."
