| Update: Disaster declaration to help residents after fire destroys Kivalina buildings VIDEO: A fire in the Northwest Arctic Borough community of Kivalina on Tuesday afternoon has cut off the village's power and telephone service, according to authorities. Alaska State Troopers received a report of a blaze at the Kivalina Bingo Hall around 12:50 p.m. The fire later spread to the nearby Community Center building. The bingo hall and community center are both a total loss, according to the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative. In an email Wednesday, AVEC President Bill Stamm wrote the blaze also compromised nearby electrical infrastructure in the power plant and telephone office. | VIDEO: California pallet yard fire forces school, road closures A multi-acre pallet yard fire with 20 to 50 foot flames near Tracy lit up the early morning sky on Thursday. Since about 2 a.m., fire crews with the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority and several other surrounding agencies have been responding to a fire located in a 6-acre pallet yard along Grant Line Road. Fire Chief Randall Bradley said that when the first units arrived on scene they found the fire to be well involved and within a matter of minutes the fire was elevated to a three alarm. One of the major challenges for responding crews was the absence of a municipal water supply at the pallet yard, requiring water tenders to be brought in. Bradley said that six water tender were called on to provide the needed fire retardant for the 12 fire engines and three ladder trucks that responded to the fire. City leaders have passed new laws, increased fines, initiated more aggressive regulation, and supported pilot projects with businesses and nonprofits. That's because some cheap, retrofitted lithium-ion batteries for e-bikes and e-scooters don't meet safety standards and are dangerously explosive. When the batteries ignite, they cause fast-moving, toxic fires that officials and experts say are difficult to extinguish. New York is considered an epicenter of this new public safety problem. Its density leads workers to charge e-bikes inside apartment buildings and the city's large population drives high demand for delivery services, according to public safety experts. Official data shows the rate of fires from lithium-ion batteries in the city has decreased so far this year. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH - METERED SITE Ford recalls nearly 43,000 SUVs due to gas leaks that can cause fires, but remedy won't fix leaks Ford is recalling nearly 43,000 small SUVs because gasoline can leak from the fuel injectors onto hot engine surfaces, increasing the risk of fires. But the recall remedy does not include repairing the fuel leaks. The recall covers certain Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years, as well as Escape SUVs from 2022. All have 1.5-liter engines. Ford says in documents filed with U.S. safety regulators that fuel injectors can crack, and gasoline or vapor can accumulate near ignition sources, possibly touching off fires. Dealers will install a tube to let gasoline flow away from hot surfaces to the ground below the vehicle.
