Magnitude 4.8 earthquake impacts Kodiak Island An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred late at night on Saturday 2 January 2021 at 11:45 pm local time near Larsen Bay, Kodiak Island County, Alaska, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 38 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. 3-Alarm Fire In California Partially Destroys Strip Mall VIDEO: A strip mall in Moreno Valley is partially destroyed after a fire broke out late Friday night. The fire started around 11:30 p.m. on Friday at Indian Street and Sunnymeade Blvd and fire crews spent several hours battling the flames. As firefighters were working, part of the second story collapsed. "When the building started to show signs of collapse, we went to a defensive posturing," said Cal Fire Battalion Chief Alex Elward. "We ordered a third alarm because we knew this fire was going to evolve, which it did." Fire crews are still assessing the damage. At least 17 businesses are impacted by the damage, including a church that was mostly spared. The cause of the fire is under investigation. KCBS-TV CBS 2 LOS ANGELES Dumpster fire helps New Mexico town say good riddance to 2020 VIDEO: Most everyone would agree 2020 was a dumpster fire. A town thought that a dumpster fire was, in fact, the perfect way to say farewell to the past year. "Tonight, we're basically just saying bye to 2020 in a different way," Fire Chief Brett Ruff said. "Tonight we are having a literal dumpster fire in Belen," Mayor Jerah Cordova said. The message isn't hard to miss. Goodbye 2020. "That's what we're doing, to just get rid of all our trash. That's the way we kinda look at it!" Ruff said. The mayor of Belen and fire department invited residents out to watch this year go up in flames. "They're driving up to give us their old calendars, some of their paper masks, that type of thing. Just to burn it off and just say bye to 2020 and hello to 2021," Ruff said. KGNS-TV NBC/ABC 8 LAREDO U.S. Hits 20 Million Cases as COVID Variant Spreads The United States started 2021 they way it ended 2020: Setting new records amidst the coronavirus pandemic. The country passed the 20 million mark for coronavirus cases on Friday, setting the mark sometime around noon, according to Johns Hopkins University's COVID-19 tracker. The total is nearly twice as many as the next worst country – India, which has 10.28 million cases. Along with the case county, more than 346,000 Americans have now died of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. That is 77% more fatalities than Brazil, which ranks second globally with 194,949 deaths. More than 125,370 coronavirus patients were hospitalized on Thursday, the fourth record-setting day in a row, according to the COVID Tracking Project. Going by official tallies, it took 292 days for the US to reach its first 10 million cases, and just 54 more days to double it, CNN reported. WEBMD Georgia Artisan turns wood salvaged from 2019 downtown Macon historic house fires into furniture They say one man's trash is another's treasure. Three homes on High Street in downtown Macon went up in flames on a Wednesday night in 2019, sending five firefighters to the hospital. "It was a house under renovation that wasn't being occupied and it was a pretty bad fire. It totaled that house. It totaled this house," said Andrew Eck while pointing to the remnants of a downtown Macon home. Two of those structures were considered a complete loss, but now, over a year later, the wood from those homes is being salvaged and used to make furniture that will live on in other houses. Eck is the owner of Blight Busters, a demolition business. Blight Busters is working to tear down the houses severely damaged in the High Street fires without bulldozers and excavators so the wood and other materials from the homes can remain intact. WMAZ-TV CBS/CW+ 13 MACON Hall of Flame Fire Museum in Arizona is one of area's best-kept secrets Chicago-area industrialist George F. Getz Jr. and his wife, Olive Atwater Getz, were driving through Wilmette, Illinois, when they saw a broken-down fire truck on the side of the road. George casually remarked he would like the 1924, Type 12 American La France fire engine. Considering the Globe Corp. chairman had everything, Olive surprised him with the old fire engine for Christmas in 1955. The gift led to a hobby on his part of collecting antique and historic firefighting equipment. This resulted in his creating the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting, now located in Phoenix, in 1961. It houses the world's largest collection of firefighting equipment and memorabilia. "Somehow they kept it a secret from him," said Mark Moorhead of the Hall of Flame Museum about George's present. "It was really, basically, intended as a gag gift, but he went nuts. He loved it. He gave the neighborhood kids rides in it. He just really became enamored of firetrucks. He started to collect more and more and more of them." SAN TAN SUN NEWS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
