Study: Alaskans are highly compliant with mask recommendations A new poll shows that the vast majority of Alaskans are abiding by either local mandates or state recommendation to wear a face mask over nose and mouth when in public, to ward off the highly infectious COVID-19 virus. Anchorage, Seward, and Juneau have mask mandates, while most of the rest of the state is going by recommendations, rather than mandates. Several large stores like Fred Meyer and Carr's have their own mask requirements. According to the statewide public opinion poll conducted over the Thanksgiving holidays, more than eight in 10 Alaskans report wearing a face mask "some or all of the time." Also, 82 percent believe it's important to change their daily habits to prevent the transmission of the virus. But only 75 percent of Alaskans who responded to the survey think masks actually work to prevent the spread of the virus that came from China late last year. One out of four Alaskans do not think the masks work as promised by medical experts. MUST READ ALASKA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

'Top Gun' Firefighting: Inside the North Carolina program teaching firefighters across the nation how to survive VIDEO: It's considered one of the toughest firefighter training programs in the country, with a waitlist stretching three years and filled with the names of firefighters from as far away as California and Washington State. The North Carolina Breathing Equipment School, which is held twice a year at Gaston College's Dallas campus, even held the distinction of being named the "Top Gun" of firefighter schools. But in late-March 2020, the school unexpectedly earned another distinction as being the site of one of the last pre-pandemic firefighter training sessions in the entire country. On a cloudy Tuesday morning, firefighters from across the country were spread out across Gaston College's Regional Emergency Services Training Center. The school teaches firefighters how to save themselves and their fellow firefighters in "maydays," a situation when a firefighter is in imminent danger and in need of immediate rescue. WCNC-TV NBC 36 CHARLOTTE Gunfire, warnings, then an explosion: What videos show about the Nashville bombing Nashville residents were jolted awake by a loud explosion in the city's historic downtown district on Christmas morning. The bomb, hidden inside a recreational vehicle, devastated businesses in the area and disrupted AT&T communication networks throughout the state. Officials described the event as an "intentional act" and a "deliberate bomb." Downtown Nashville appeared to be peacefully quiet early Friday morning, until residents heard what they believed to be gunshots. Videos, photos and audio show city blocks that quickly turned chaotic in the wake of the explosion. The Washington Post examined surveillance video, listened to emergency response radio channels and spoke to witnesses to reconstruct how the incident unfolded. THE WASHINGTON POST - METERED SITE Massive fire caused by explosion engulfs Texas home, damages multiple others VIDEO: A homeowner said she is glad to be alive after her house exploded into a fireball that damaged multiple homes in southeast Houston. The explosion happened around 11 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 6000 block of Doulton Drive near Bellfort Avenue. Mildred Whitfield captured the fire on her phone across the street. "This was an explosion, I mean it was a ball of fire, it was whoop - it just went up," Whitfield said. Homeowner Jewell Meyers told KPRC 2 photographer Wladimir Moquete that she noticed the smell of gas Sunday morning. The 82-year-old said the odor was strong and she could smell it in her bathroom and her kitchen, so she went to the neighbor's house next door to ask about to odor. "I wasn't going to stay in there smelling that gas that strong," Meyers said. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Kentucky boy delivers thousands of cards to first responders A Muhlenberg boy is finishing up a year-long journey. Seven-year-old Ayden Robbins does good deeds year-round, but he's most proud of the thousands of cards he's written to first responders. In all, he's written cards to 68 departments across the country, from California to Alaska to Florida to Maine. In October, he started sending Christmas cards to every department he could. "We got everything delivered off Christmas eve. His total was 3,028 Christmas cards," explains Ayden's Grandmother, Leah Norris. He hand-delivered to departments in Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio. Owensboro FOP even sponsored his journey. "They sent him a check in the mail for a couple hundred dollars. We opened him a bank account and deposited it in there." Leah says these first responders are Ayden's heroes, every officer, every firefighter and every dispatcher. The messages he receives personalize it so much more. WYMT-TV CBS 15 HAZARD Fire department in New York holds moment of silence, remembers fatal 1983 blast VIDEO: On Sunday 37 years ago, five Buffalo firefighters and two civilians died in one of the worst disasters the city has ever seen. A propane explosion leveled a portion of North Division Street downtown. Every year, the Buffalo Fire Department marks the exact time of the blast, 8:23 p.m., with a moment of silence. The explosion ripped through a warehouse and destroyed a dozen homes in the area. One man who was injured in the blaze returned to the memorial, that stands at the site of the deadly explosion, and said the firefighters had told him at first it was a false alarm. "And then the building just blew up," Theodore Hampton, who was injured in the fire, had previously told 2 On Your Side. "It just blew up. I mean, being so close to the building, you could barely hear anything. But I knew that I was knocked out, after I came to, that many people had died that night."
