A photo snapped just before a deadly midair collision in May 2019 between two flightseeing floatplanes near Ketchikan became a pivotal part of a federal investigation that wrapped up this week. Six people died when the Mountain Air Service single-engine de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver and Taquan Air's larger turboprop de Havilland DHC-3 Otter collided in clear skies over George Inlet near a scenic waterfall. Taken by a passenger in the Beaver, the image shows the Otter so close its passengers can be seen looking out the rear windows. No one in the Beaver survived. But somehow, the passenger's Canon EOS Rebel digital camera withstood the 3,350-foot drop to the ground below, National Transportation Safety Board investigators say. They found it as they, with the help of volunteer searchers, combed through a 3,000-foot field of debris scattered across land and water. "That was the last photo that was on the camera," chief investigator Aaron Sauer said this week.

VIDEO: A two-alarm fire in Gerritsen Beach left two people injured Thursday, fire officials say. The fire started at a house on the corner of Knapp Street and Avenue W at around 8 p.m. Citizen app footage shows the fire tearing through the home. Crews were eventually able to get the fire under control and extinguish it. The back of the home was left charred and windows were destroyed. The fire department says two people were treated for minor injuries at the scene. A neighbor nearby, Cynthia Lew, says she had to put her mask on to avoid smoke inhalation. "I have never experienced a fire like this ever before and the smoke was like really all over," Lew says. Avenue W remained closed off to traffic as of 7 a.m. Friday. There is no word on the cause of the fire.

VIDEO: Members of Mount Pleasant Fire Station #5 are staying in unique temporary living quarters while the station undergoes renovations. Over the last month, fire crews have been living out of a villa at Somerby Senior Living in Mount Pleasant. Christie Gauldin, the Director of Sales and Marketing, says she was a little surprised when Mount Pleasant Fire asked if their crews could stay there while their station underwent renovations, but she knew it was something they had to make work. "I've been in senior living for about 14 years and this is definitely a first," Gauldin said. Captain Matt Tidwell with Mount Pleasant Fire says they wanted to stay close to the district five area to be able to still serve this community, especially since there aren't any other stations nearby.

VIDEO: Like all too many public service organizations, Williamsport Fire and EMS in Maryland is cash crunched by COVID. "COVID really messed with things this year," Michael Nokes, the Deputy Chief, said. Not only were funds down, but expenses went way up. "We just purchased a ladder truck, we have a ladder truck that's over thirty years old, it was well overdue for a replacement," Nokes said. They also need new equipment for the truck. The company accepts car donations, but most of the vehicles they receive are definitely end-of-life. "We use them for the purpose of vehicle stabilization and extrication, which is really great for our members to practice on." So when a couple approached the company about donating a vehicle, they were expecting another dying clunker. So you can imagine their surprise when they were presented with a 1964 Caddilac Eldorado, which had been sitting in storage for over three decades, in beautiful condition.

There is a huge gender gap in the world of firefighting. Only 8% of firefighters in the United States are female according to the National Fire Protection Association. The Greensboro Fire Department wants to bridge the gender gap through a new program. Camp Spark is the department's new initiative aimed at changing the narrative to get more women into fire stations. Brittany King came up with the idea in hopes more women will climb the ladder to a career in the fire service. She's a seasoned fire fighter who recognized the lack of representation and wanted to do something about it. Just 6% of the Greensboro Fire Department is made up of women. "A big part of the reason why there are not a lot of females in the fire service is because of a lack of representation -- they don't see women like them in the fire service," King said.

It's a boy! An explosion that rattled homes within a 20-mile radius Tuesday night is being blamed on a gender reveal celebration at a Kingston quarry that police say involved more than a pound of Tannerite and blue chalk. Many residents in communities across southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts reported hearing the explosion just after 7 p.m. No injuries were reported in the quarry at Torromeo Industries on Dorre Road. Kingston Police Chief Donald Briggs Jr. said police are looking for those involved. "Obviously, depending on the amount (of explosives) they were using, it could be extremely dangerous," Briggs said Wednesday. Gender reveal party accidents — some deadly — have made headlines as they've grown in popularity among expectant parents over the past decade. Last year, a device from a gender reveal celebration sparked a massive wildfire in California that resulted in a firefighter's death.
