Alaska officials continue planning for the future as COVID-19 cases slowly tick upward Alaska officials expressed confidence in the state's health care and testing capacity Thursday, broadly describing what's in store for the state during the COVID-19 pandemic as the number of cases among Alaskans rose by seven for a total of 300. "We're going to be charting our own course that works for Alaska and keeps Alaska healthy," Gov. Mike Dunleavy told reporters Thursday. The state is on a path toward reopening certain sectors of the economy, but Dunleavy said much of those decisions depend on information about testing and case counts statewide. "We're feeling pretty good about where things are," Dunleavy said, citing increasing hospital and testing capacity in the state. Those increases in testing capabilities, said the state's chief medical officer Dr. Anne Zink, have been "significant." As more communities, hospitals and clinics can do their own COVID-19 testing independently, the state begins to function more as a backup, Zink said. ANCHORAGE DAILY NEWS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

EMS crews get tents to protect from COVID-19 in North Carolina counties VIDEO: The Pasquotank-Camden EMS is taking action to try and better protect its patients and first responders. Previously, it was wrapping one of its ambulances with plastic. Chief Jerry Newell said that unit was designated to pick up possible COVID-19 patients. But then Newell said the department got an idea from Onslow County EMS in North Carolina. They created tents to be used while treating patients in each rescue vehicle. The chief said they went to Lowe's to get the materials, which cost about $70 per tent. He said people came in on their days off to make them for crews out in the field. "Putting the mobile tents on each truck allows us to have every truck serviced for a COVID patient and keep that COVID exposure isolated," said Newell. "When we add this tent to the recipe, risk for exposure becomes even less than minimal because we keep all the exposure inside of the tent." WTKR-TV CBS 3 NORFOLK Disposable N95 Masks Can Be Decontaminated, Researchers Confirm Researchers have confirmed that there are several effective methods for decontaminating the N95 masks worn by health professionals so that they can be used more than once, the National Institutes of Health announced Wednesday. A substantial body of research already showed that the masks, designed for one-time use, can be reused in a crisis. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in March authorized reuse because of shortages driven by the Covid-19 pandemic. In recent weeks the Food and Drug Administration has issued emergency approvals for several systems of mask decontamination. None of these rules or methods are intended for the cloth masks recommended or in some locations required for use by everyone in public. The C.D.C. advises regular washing of homemade fabric masks in a washing machine. BUSINESS WIRE Utah passes bill to provide workers' comp to first responders who contract COVID-19 The Utah House of Representatives and Senate both passed a bill during a special legislative session on Thursday that would amend the state's Workers' Compensation Act to include coverage for volunteer first responders and health care providers who contract COVID-19. Under House Bill 3007, sponsored by House Majority Leader Francis Gibson, R-Mapleton, it would be presumed that "a first responder who claims to have contracted COVID-19 during the performance of the first responder's duties as a first responder" is eligible for a workers' compensation claim. According to the bill, first responders claiming to have contracted COVID-19 would have to "provide a copy of the positive laboratory test or the written documentation of a physician's diagnosis to the first responder's employer or insurer." The bill passed through the House unanimously on Monday morning and through the Senate later in the evening on a 25-3 vote. DAILY HERALD Ohio hospital chaplain launches text line to thank frontline workers "People used to say, take it one day at a time. Right now, one day is a little long for most of us. One hour is probably a little long. Which is why I say it's one breath at a time." Rebecca Riley Moyer launched the BRAVE text line to send encouraging notes, written by her, straight to your phone every morning. All you have to do is text BRAVE to 484848. This week, FOX19 NOW talked with Moyer about the project. She said what's behind the project is recognizing that we're brave. She referenced a period of time when she was diagnosed with an illness. "When I was going through a period of my illness before I was diagnosed, I didn't feel brave. I felt like I was failing like I was falling apart. It took the rearview mirror that I kept getting up, going to the doctor, I kept looking for answers. And that in itself was very very brave. That's where this all came from.
