With an eye on the future versus hopes for a rebound in near-term orders, the major airliner manufacturers are attending the Singapore Airshow to maintain customer connections and visibility in a region that has long been the biggest air transport growth market. Airbus, Boeing, ATR and Embraer will all exhibit at the show this week, but with tempered expectations.

ATR continues its commitment to attending the Singapore Airshow in a region that has long been an important market for the turboprop manufacturer. ATR aircraft have played a critical role in the delivery of medical supplies, COVID-19 vaccines and goods in a region dominated by mountains, islands and remote communities.

AAPA director general Subhas Menon said he was encouraged by the reopening of borders in Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam in recent weeks, but was concerned about China, which remains closed to international travel as it continues a strict lockdown because of the COVID-19 virus.
 
Continuing coronavirus concerns mean that the 2022 edition of the Singapore Airshow is proceeding cautiously. Organizers say the expected numbers of both exhibitors and visitors will be down on the 2020 show, which was the first major aerospace event to be impacted by the then emerging COVID-19 threat. Nevertheless, delegates and exhibitors are arriving at Changi, and the static display is taking shape.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is promising new-to-class cabin products on its Boeing 777Xs when they enter service, with suite-style first-class cabins first seen on the Airbus A380. The flag-carrier said design work for its 777-9 cabins began in 2018 and is now finalized and awaiting certification.

The Singapore Airshow opens this week with a dramatically changed airline landscape across Asia compared with when the last show was held. The last Singapore Airshow, in February 2020, occurred just before the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic
