Santa Claus is coming to town (in three months, that is) |
It might feel too early to start talking about Christmas but Jolly St. Nick's time to shine is only 16 weeks away. If you're a true Christmas lover like myself, there's no time like the present to start making holiday plans. Bronner's Christmas Wonderland is now hiring seasonal positions for its store. The year-round Christmas Wonderland is having a job fair today, Sept. 4 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 25 Christmas Lane in Frankenmuth. The job fair will include on the spot interviews. Speaking of the holidays, Pentatonix is bringing their “Hallelujah! It’s A Christmas Tour” to Michigan. The three-time Grammy award winning quintet will be in Grand Rapids on December 11. Tickets go on sale Friday, September 6. |

After delays, work to reopen the largest ski jump in the Western Hemisphere gets going |
New heights: After months of delay, work is starting on a project to revitalize Copper Peak, the largest ski jump in the Western Hemisphere. Once reopened, Copper Peak will be the only ski flying hill outside of Europe and the only one in the world with an all-season surface, bringing international competition to the western corner of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Ski flying is like ski jumping but with longer distances. Why now: Plans to reopen the ski have been in the works for nearly a decade with the support of the International Ski Federation. Michigan appropriated $20 million for the project in 2022. More in business: A German automotive company is planning to build a new battery components assembly plant in West Michigan, a $105 million investment that is expected to bring 170 jobs to a Grand Rapids suburb. |

Joe Biden to make his first presidential visit to Ann Arbor on Friday |
Presidential: The White House has confirmed that President Biden will stop in Ann Arbor on Friday, Sept. 6. He will deliver remarks discussing how his Investing in America agenda is benefiting communities across Michigan and ensuring Americans have a brighter, more prosperous future, according to the White House. Campaign trail: Vice President Kamala Harris brought her 2024 presidential campaign to Wayne County for the second time in less than a month on Monday, Sept. 2. Here are five key takeaways to know about her Labor Day visit to Detroit. In court: A Michigan judge ruled that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. must remain on the November presidential ballot, dealing a blow to his crusade to strategically remove his ticket from the battleground state. |

Michigan’s weather this week goes from summer to fall in a hurry |
This week's weather: We will have several summery days here in Michigan before a strong cold front brings a blast of fall-like temperatures. Thursday will warm up to the mid-to-upper 80s by the afternoon. Things will cool off on Saturday with high temperature forecasts only in the 50s. Smoky skies: A large patch of wildfire smoke is currently moving into Michigan. Wednesday will be a hazy day with lots of wildfire smoke in the air. The forecasts show the smoke rolling out of Michigan throughout Thursday. The smoke is moving southeast out of southern Canada, the Dakotas, Minnesota and Wisconsin into northwest Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Coming to town: The most endangered wildflower in all of Michigan, the Voss's goldenrod, only grows in one place – amid the small arms and artillery ranges at an Up North military base. |

Lions eyeing noise record for season opener against Rams |
Let's get loud: The Detroit Lions broke its stadium record noise levels when the Los Angeles Rams came to town for the playoffs last season, topping out at 133.6 decibels. Now the team is hoping to break the noise record once again for Sunday Night Football when they face off against the Rams in the season opener. "No credibility": Jim Harbaugh said last month that he was done engaging the NCAA, but that hasn’t stopped the former Michigan coach from poking it. In an ESPN story published Monday on Harbaugh’s first eight months back in the NFL, the new Los Angeles Chargers head coach aired his frustration with the NCAA and its authority. New beginnings: Former Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson has a new job. After getting dismissed from the Michigan football program following a DUI arrest in April, Robinson was hired as the running backs coach at LEAD Prep Academy in Brighton, Michigan. |

Mackinac Island in the running for Best Place to Visit for Fall in US |
Best of the best: If you love Mackinac Island's horse-drawn carriages, handmade fudge or picturesque views and think the spot needs recognition, it’s time to get those voting fingertips ready. Michigan’s most-visited island is in the running with 19 other well-known travel spots in a USAToday contest for the Best Place to Visit for Fall. Voting ends on Monday, Sept. 9. One of a kind: Michigan’s first combined music venue and cannabis-consumption lounge could soon come to the Ypsilanti-area, according to its developer. The proposed project includes a 4,300-square-foot lounge, outdoor amphitheater and a 1,260-square-foot storage building, according to preliminary site plans conditionally approved Aug. 27 by the Ypsilanti Township Planning Commission. Where to go: Most of the Ludington State Park is closed for the next 10 months for major upgrades. We have a list of what’s still open. |
