The season for LSU men's basketball has essentially long been over. Now, at last, so is the Tigers' tortuous losing streak. LSU beat Vanderbilt 84-77 at the PMAC on Wednesday night behind 35 points from KJ Williams, ending a 14-game losing streak that also meant the Tigers were 0-for-2023. Their last win came Dec. 28 in their SEC opener against Arkansas. The win doesn't change the trajectory of a lost season for LSU. But it does at least provide a bit of positive reinforcement for a team that has continued to give effort under first-year coach Matt McMahon. As basketball season winds down, spring football is about to start. And before it starts, there has been the news of star wide receiver Malik Nabers and his now dismissed misdemeanor gun charge. There is a catch to the dropped charges, though, as our Wilson Alexander explains. Two games remain for the No. 5-ranked LSU women's basketball team as it heads to Vanderbilt on Thursday. Here is a preview of that game in Nashville (6:30 p.m., SECNetwork+), as well as my column on questions and answers about where the Tigers go from here. We also have our snapshot of LSU's NCAA Tournament resume and rankings on the eve of the second and final NCAA Tournament top 16 seed reveal, which will be shown at halftime of Thursday's South Carolina-Tennessee game (6 p.m., ESPN). Over at gymnastics, the euphoria over No. 8 LSU's win over No. 2 Florida on Friday didn't last long. Coach Jay Clark revealed Wednesday that one of his team's top gymnasts, sophomore KJ Johnson, will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken bone in her foot. How she broke her foot is, well, almost unbelievable. And all-arounder Alyona Shchennikova may also be out with a groin injury. They are the latest blows in an injury-plagued season full of them for the Tigers, who are at No. 9 Alabama on Friday. Shchennikova's injury may open the door for LSU gymnast and social media superstar Olivia Dunne to make her season debut on uneven bars after her own leg injury. Even though she hasn't competed yet this season, Dunne is still ranked as the top-earning college athlete on Instagram, per a report. How much does she get per post? Read here to find out. With baseball starting and all the drama, good and bad, with LSU's basketball teams and other sports, LSU softball has been flying under the proverbial radar so far this season. But so far this season, those Tigers just keep winning, running their record to 12-0 Wednesday with a 9-3 win at ULM. Finally, if you've ever wanted a chance to hit a golf ball in Tiger Stadium — and who hasn't? — there's an event coming to Death Valley that could allow you to check a big box on your bucket list. Well, that's all for now, folks. As always, thank you for subscribing to our newsletter. We're never on the journalistic equivalent of a 14-game losing streak thanks to you. Until next time, Scott Rabalais |
