Private-sector employers hired 253,000 workers in May, with 83,000 jobs coming from small businesses, 113,000 from midsize firms and 57,000 from large companies, according to ADP. This growth follows April's revised gain of 174,000.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has signed legislation that gives employees of fast-food restaurants and retailers protection, including a more predictable work schedule. The package of five bills takes effect in November.

Survey: Best workplaces offer basic benefits plus perks
A survey of 169,000 workers for Inc.'s Best Workplaces list showed the top companies offered health and dental insurance and retirement plans as baseline benefits, with added perks such wellness initiatives, flexible scheduling and paternity leave. The data showed 86% of the top 50 companies offered flexible scheduling.

Artificial intelligence and robotics technology will require HR departments to employ staffers with skills such as data presentation, predictive analytics and digital leadership, a Randstad survey shows. "Contrary to the headlines, this survey shows that automation can provide opportunities for people and vice versa," says Rebecca Henderson, CEO of Randstad Sourceright.
