Stormy weather heading into the weekend. Two more severe storm waves will likely cross parts of Minnesota through Friday. National battle over mail and absentee ballots will have a legal skirmish in St. Paul next month. The Minnesota Supreme Court has agreed to speed up consideration of a legal challenge around absentee ballot rules for the November general election. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a requirement that people voting remotely get a witness to certify their eligibility has been suspended.

The death toll has been inching up slowly, and is now at a 7-day average of 7 fatalities, the highest it's been since the first week of July. It’s still just a fraction of the dozens of deaths a day reported in May. Due to rising cases in the area, elementary school students in Ramsey and Dakota counties would no longer be recommended to attend school in person — if school started this week.
