Suspect identified after shooting rampage kills six in two Texas cities |
A suspect is in custody and charged with capital murder after a shooting rampage that unfolded across two Texas cities and left six people dead, authorities said. Police have identified Shane James, 34, as the man suspected of killing four people and wounding two police officers at multiple locations in Austin on Tuesday. James has also been linked to the deaths of a couple in their 50s who were found in a home in San Antonio on Tuesday, according to authorities. James was arrested Tuesday evening after crashing his vehicle while speeding away from a shootout with police, Interim Austin Police Chief Robin Henderson said. Kevin McCarthy leaving Congress at the end of the year |
Two months after he was ousted as House speaker in a historic vote, Rep. Kevin McCarthy announced today that he is leaving Congress. “While I'll be departing the House at the end of this year, I will never, ever give up fighting for this country that I love so much,” McCarthy said in a video posted on social media. With the GOP’s narrow majority in the House, it took McCarthy 15 votes to win the speakership back in January. But under the deal he cut, it only took one lawmaker to force a vote to oust him.In October, a handful of conservative hardliners joined all the House Democrats to vote him out. |

Intense fighting in Gaza as freed hostages blast Netanyahu |
The Israel Defense Forces have released new bodycam video of troops fighting house to house in Khan Younis, Gaza’s second largest city, as the military pushes further south into the Hamas-controlled enclave. As the fighting intensifies, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is deepening, with shortages of food, water, and medicine. Civilians are increasingly running out of places to flee to safety. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said troops have surrounded the home of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in southern Gaza. “His house is not his fortress, and he can escape, but it’s only a matter of time before we get him,” Netanyahu said. On Tuesday, Netanyahu held a tense meeting with freed hostages and their families. Leaked audio reveals their anger at the government, with some saying they felt abandoned during their weeks in Hamas captivity. U.S. warship shoots down drone in Red Sea |
A U.S. Navy destroyer shot down a drone fired from the Houthi controlled areas of Yemen over the Red Sea today, a U.S. military official said. The incident comes just days after the Pentagon said another U.S. warship in the Red Sea had shot down three drones as it responded to attacks on commercial ships. The Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been escalating their aggression in the Red Sea, as the war between Israel and Hamas rages. |
U.S. charges four Russians with war crimes for allegedly torturing American |
The U.S. has charged four Russian soldiers with war crimes for allegedly torturing an American citizen in Ukraine during the early days of Moscow’s invasion, the Justice Department announced today. It marks the first time the U.S. has brought charges under the War Crimes Act passed nearly 30 years ago, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced today. The nine-page indictment accuses the Russians of abducting an American, who was living in a Ukrainian village, and then beating, torturing, and brutally interrogating him over a 10-day period, even threatening to kill him in a mock execution. The American did not fight or otherwise participate in the war, federal prosecutors stated in the indictment. All four Russians remain at large, and the chances of the Justice Department bringing them into custody are slim. |
Deadly atmospheric river storms slam Northwest |
Millions remain under flood alerts in the Pacific Northwest today as storms produced by an atmospheric river pound the region. In Oregon, at least two people have been found dead in swollen creek waters since the storms began, authorities said. In Washington state, the Coast Guard released dramatic video of a chopper rescuing five people, including four who’d become trapped in their home by four feet of water. The Sea-Tac Airport reported more than two inches of rain Tuesday, breaking the record of 1.67 inches set in 1970, the National Weather Service said. Amtrak service between Portland and Seattle has been suspended through tomorrow morning, after a landslide over the tracks. |
GOP presidential rivals to debate after Trump’s “dictator” comment |
Four of the remaining 2024 Republican presidential primary candidates will meet on stage tonight in Alabama for their fourth debate, after GOP frontrunner Donald Trump raised eyebrows with comments about what he would do if he retakes the White House. The former president told a Fox News Town Hall Tuesday he would not be a dictator “except for Day One,” if he is elected in 2024. Trump said he would immediately close the border and expand oil drilling. “After that, I’m not a dictator,” he said. President Joe Biden’s campaign immediately seized on those comments. “Donald Trump has been telling us exactly what he will do if he’s reelected and tonight he said he will be a dictator on day one,” the campaign said in a statement. “Americans should believe him.” In a candid moment at a fundraiser on Tuesday, Biden told donors that he was “not sure” he’d be running for re-election if Trump wasn’t in the race. “We cannot let him win,” Biden said. |
