| | | | | | Cranberry is a perennial vine native to the northeastern part of North America. The berries are used in traditional medicine to treat fevers and blood disorders, to reduce swelling and to heal wounds. The processed fruit and juice are widely consumed as food. Cranberry juice extract is available in supplemental form to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Compounds found in cranberry and its juice extracts showed antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects in preclinical studies. Clinical trials reported utility of cranberry in treating urinary tract infections (UTIs) in adults and in children, in preventing cystitis, and in reducing the risk of UTIs in prostate cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. But definitive data are needed for recommending cranberry for preventing UTIs. In other studies, regular intake of cranberry juice was found to suppress H. pylori infection, a major factor in peptic ulcer disease, which may lead to gastric cancer. It may also improve the risk factors for cardiovascular disease in diabetic men.
