| | | | | | Garlic is the edible bulb of the Allium sativum plant, and an important component of many cuisines around the world. It has been used in traditional medicine to treat infections, chronic cough, digestive disorders and arthritis. Garlic supplements are used to control high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, to treat the common cold, and to prevent diseases including cancer. Clinical findings of garlic’s effectiveness in lowering high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure are not definitive. Consumption of garlic has been associated with reduced risk of certain cancers, but there is no evidence that it can treat cancer. Robust data are also lacking to support its use for preventing and treating common cold. The FDA has recently warned companies promoting garlic with false claims of preventing COVID‑19. | | | | |

| | Take Note Of: Magnet Therapy | | Magnet therapy is an alternative treatment promoted to treat cancer, AIDS, psychiatric disorders, stress, multiple sclerosis, infections, and to stimulate the immune system. Proponents claim that magnetic fields have healing powers. They are believed to stimulate metabolism, increase oxygenation and create a less acidic environment within the body, which is thought to kill cancer cells. Small studies suggest improvements in pain associated with fibromyalgia and arthritis, but these observations have not been confirmed in larger trials. Magnet therapy has also not been studied in cancer patients. Magnets can damage medical devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators. They can also cause serious harm when in close proximity of an MRI machine. The FDA has warned companies marketing magnet therapy kits with false claims of preventing or treating COVID‑19. | | | |
