Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Weijia Jiang & Jon Karl

ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl CBS News correspondent Weijia Jiang became the object's of President Donald Trump's Wednesday media ire during the coronavirus press briefing over a set of questions about whistleblowing vaccine expert Dr. Rick Bright.

Dr. Bright released a blockbuster statement yesterday, in which he said he’d been demoted from his position leading the agency tasked with vaccine development because he had pushed back against funding unproven coronavirus treatments that Trump has relentlessly promoted — and suggested that political connections and cronyism were behind Trump’s promotion of them.

When Jon Karl asked the president if indeed Bright was "pushed out of that job,” the President plead ignorance, saying he'd "never heard of him."

After a brief exchange ending with Trump saying "maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t," the president blew off Karl's follow-up and moved on. But CBS's Jiang brought up the issue again in the briefing, posing her question to Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Jiang asked whether Fauci and other experts feel they can speak publicly even if their view differs from Trump's, and he indicated that he does.  On whether people at NIH are concerned about being able to speak freely Fauci said "absolutely not."

This is an example of getting a good and perhaps even unexpected, on the record answer, and one Trump could've been happy with. But man oh man, he wasn't.

MEDIA LOSER:
Laura Ingraham & Raymond Arroyo

Fox News host Laura Ingraham and her regular guest, Raymond Arroyo, put together a really shockingly offensive and callous segment for her show on Wednesday night.

The two ridiculed CNN personalities over contracting the Covid-19 coronavirus and then talking about their experiences with it.

To date, three prominent CNN figures have announced that they tested positive for the virus: Richard QuestBrooke Baldwin, and Chris Cuomo. All three have chronicled their battles with the disease for the network, and in Cuomo’s case, the virus has become a major, personal issue for his family now that he has announced that his wife and son have it as well.

“Laura, the first rule of journalism is don’t inject yourself into the story,” said Arroyo, spinning up his routine. “But there seems to be a deliberate attempt to graft a slew of CNN anchors onto this COVID crisis. A number of them have contracted the virus and emoted their personal experiences."

The two were highly amused already, but the really funny part of this hilarious take on the virus that has killed over 40,000 Americans was the next bit.

"It almost appears they’ve launched a series of new reality shows. You could call this one ‘Are You Sicker Than a CNN Anchor?’” he said, as an Are You Sicker Than a CNN Anchor? graphic appeared on screen.

No seriously. That happened.

You don't need us to explain why that earns today's "loser" spot.

The A-Block

Second wave

The issue of a second wave of coronavirus in the fall came up at yesterday's White House coronavirus press briefing, and Dr. Anthony Fauci said he is "convinced" that "we will have coronavirus in the fall."

The second wave issue, as well as a continuing discussion about when and how businesses and government will begin to reoopen, will no doubt be a primary topic at today's briefing as well.

Watch today's briefing live, or in full, here.

Then again, CNBC’s Jim Cramer says the briefings are "unwatchable." So, you know, be advised.

'He didn’t prepare!'

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough went on a 4 minute screaming tear about President Donald Trump’s lack of preparedness for the coronavirus crisis, tying it to Trump’s current insistence that there’s a “good chance” the disease won’t roar back in the fall.

It was quite a rant.

Odious and deleted

Former Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo, currently a spokesperson for HHS, apparently didn't want people to see the slew of racist, conspiracy theory promoting tweets he's posted about the coronavirus.

But too bad because they're right there.

Save the Juggalos

The Insane Clown Posse and Psychopathic Records announced the postponement of the annual Gathering of the Juggalos due to concerns over the coronavirus.

Maybe they should change their name to the Pretty Reasonable Clown Posse?

Privacy

Fox News senior judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano warned of major violations to civil liberties that might occur if authorities are allowed to use technology to surveil the public in order to combat the coronavirus.

“Don’t treat us like we are children. You work for us. We don’t work for you,” Napolitano said, adding that the people "have the right to bodily integrity."

'Behind us' by June

“I truly do believe … that if current trend lines hold, that by early June, we could largely have this coronavirus epidemic behind us, and begin to see our nation open back up and go back to work,” Vice President Mike Pence told radio host Rush Limbaugh on Thursday.

Family

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) dedicated the latest coronavirus relief bill — which is currently being pushed through the House after passing in the Senate — to her sister “who is dying in a hospital” of the coronavirus, in emotional floor remarks Thursday.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) mourned for her brother, Donald Reed Herring, and reflected on his life Thursday after he passed away from the coronavirus, in a heartbreaking Twitter thread.

This is a stunning poll

Forty percent of Republicans say the threat from the coronavirus pandemic “has been exaggerated,” while another ten percent aren’t sure — a drastic difference from the rest of the Americans polled.

A Yahoo! News/YouGov poll published Thursday found stark partisan divides on a number of key questions related to public health and the state of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the most stark and alarming divide, on the question of whether a respondent believes the “threat of COVID-19 has been exaggerated?” 40% of Republicans said “yes,” versus just 18% of everyone else combined — Democrats and independents.

And there's even more that you should read from this poll.

Good News

The Florida Aquarium latest discovery could save the only coral barrier reef in the U.S., which is often referred to as “America’s Great Barrier Reef” and is the third-largest in the world.

“Scientists at The Florida Aquarium have again made history, this time becoming the first in the world to reproduce ridged cactus coral or Mycetophyllia lamarckiana in human care,” the aquarium announced.

It's actually great news, and there's video, too.

Must-Watch Clip of the Day

Correcting a food crime

California Democratic Senator Kamala Harris came to Sen. Mark Warner’s rescue following his viral tuna melt debacle, giving the Virginia Democrat a ten-minute tutorial on how to make the sandwich without destroying the collective American appetite to ever eat again.

This important closure.
