CEASE AND DESIST: In the early months of the pandemic, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell's administration did not cite a single individual for violating public health rules but did shutter a few businesses for infractions. On Tuesday, a City Hall spokesman warned it could happen again, saying, "If you are found to be in violation and they can determine that on the spot, you are going to get a cease and desist.” Enforcement of the new rules begins Monday. In schools, meanwhile, almost 650 students and employees have tested positive for COVID-19 in the first few days of classes in Jefferson and Orleans parishes. More than 4,200 students and staff have been sent home to quarantine because they might have been exposed to an infected person. For the past seven days, Louisiana has the country's highest per capita death rate from COVID.
UNFATHOMABLE: It had been less than a day since her daughter was shot dead, and Lynette Jones was having difficulty speaking. But this much she made clear Tuesday: Roshelle “Ro” Lemon was raising two boys, was seven months pregnant with a third and made her living caring for others. That ended when she was struck by a bullet while riding in a car in New Orleans' Desire neighborhood.
SHOCKED: "I'm scared to turn anything on. I'm sweating. I've unplugged everything in my house: lamps, clocks," said Charlotte Kearney, whose electricity expenses at her house near Slidell more than doubled from July to August. She's one of many CLECO customers who were shocked with they opened their latest CLECO bill.
