The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Matthew Albright | Assistant metro editor

Good morning. Here's a roundup of some of our best recent stories:

A violent Sunday

After shattering the record for homicides in 2021, this year started with relatively little gun violence. But on Sunday, there were four different shootings:

  • One person was wounded on Reulet Avenue
  • Two people were wounded, one critically, near Government Street
  • One person was killed on Lobdell Boulevard
  • Another person was killed on Dallas Drive

Meanwhile, our reporters tracked down more information about a confrontation Saturday in which an East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Deputy killed someone. Police said they were there for the twin brother of the man who was killed, but he had kidnapped his girlfriend and taken her to Alexandria.

How to get students college credit

For most Baton Rouge students, Advanced Placement classes are the gold standard way to get college credit in high school. But Superintendent Sito Narcisse is launching a plan to get virtually all kids in a different system, called dual enrollment.

His plan has left some parents and teachers wondering if AP classes could be falling by the wayside.

Work from home? Not so easy.

With omicron causing COVID cases to surge again, some schools and workplaces are going virtual again. That's terrible news for people who live in rural places that don't have broadband internet.

This story explains the problem through the eyes of St. Helena Parish teacher.

Thanks for reading, and have a great week!
