| | | | A tragic loss for Baltimore's tech scene I understand that the Baltimore tech community is grappling with the heavy news of Pava LaPere's sudden recent death. I had the opportunity to speak with several leaders in Baltimore for an upcoming article dedicated to honoring Pava and her significant contributions to the city. It's clear from my conversations that her absence will be deeply felt. Back in May, during the celebration of UpSurge Baltimore's 100th Equitech Tuesday at the R. House Garage, I spotted Pava from across the room. Her name had been a constant presence in Baltimore, and I had seen her work featured in our Technical.ly coverage. I felt compelled to introduce myself, but as it turned out, there was no need. Pava was already familiar with my tech coverage, and we shared a brief laugh and plans to catch up soon. We did eventually catch up in August for a professional on-camera interview. I've spent the day watching bits of that interview while grieving in my own way between working. Our conversation mostly revolved around the exciting news of additional funding for EcoMap Technologies. What struck me was how Pava exuded warmth and joy over her work. A few weeks later, I happened to hear her name again at a local Mt. Vernon nail salon, where an unmistakable robotic voice announced, "P-A-V-A L-A-P-E-R-E IS CALLING." I couldn't help but wonder if she might walk in, and if we would have the chance to exchange greetings. I even pondered whether she'd have to navigate the onslaught of spotted lanternflies at the door, just as my friend and I did. Regrettably, she didn't walk in that day. But I would have cherished the opportunity to see her once more, and I know that sentiment resonates with many of us. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family, close friends, colleagues and all those she inspired throughout the Baltimore community. I extend my gratitude to those who have shared their reflections as we work on our forthcoming story to honor Pava's memory.
