Black History Month has arrived amidst America’s ongoing season of racial reckoning and cultural unrest. Tempted as many of us may be to play it safe—to share a well-known MLK quote and consider our jobs accomplished—history and its Author call us to more. For centuries, Black women have led the way in the pursuit of truth and justice. Consider these words from three such women. Sojourner Truth: “Truth is powerful and it prevails.” Nannie Helen Burroughs: “Just as love is a verb, so is faith.” Ida B. Wells: “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” As we celebrate our first black, South Asian, female vice-president, and watch the first-ever National Youth Poet Laureate, may we not stop there. The heritage of black people, especially black women, in America beckons us to acknowledge injustice and consider our role in alleviating it. On a special bonus episode of Quick to Listen, sponsored by PBS, Christianity Today Editor-in-Chief Daniel Harrell invites us to do just that as he facilitates a discussion on the black church. Harrell hosts a panel of esteemed ethicists, professors, and pastors. Tune in to learn more about the Black church as a movement of the Spirit that’s still alive today. |
