It’s been a strange week in Formula 1, where Ferrari executed a launch event on Friday with no car and much of the previous conversation has revolved around a Red Bull that we haven’t seen properly yet either!
Intriguing that Sergio Perez – who comes with a wealth of experience to Red Bull – has immediately identified the car’s strong front-end feel as its strength. I guess we can extrapolate from that, and surmise that the rear-end isn’t quite so impressive – and how many times did we see Max Verstappen and Alex Albon spin or find the wall last year?
Perez’s strength has always been his rear-end feel, which allows him to manage his tyres so expertly. So this could work out well, right? Or not…
In Ferrari-land, its weakness is clear: an underpowered and draggy chassis. Team principal Mattia Binotto is clear that this has been addressed and believes “we’ve recovered a lot of speed on the straights”.
It has a big step to find, and it’s going to be one of F1 2021’s most fascinating narrative arcs to follow. |
