Riky Rick's mom, Louisa Zondo, recently achieved the significant milestone of reaching Mount Everest's base camp. Following the death of the South African rapper – real name Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado – on 23 February, Zondo and Riky's aunt Xoliswa Kakana set out on an epic trail to reach one of the two base camps of Earth's highest mountain above sea level. Their trek began on 23 March 2022, a month after Riky's death, with Zondo sharing diary entries of her experience on social media. On Saturday, the pair reached their goal after 10 days of walking and climbing. "Dear MaRiky, On day 11 of the trek - 2 April 2022 - I'm again waking up to the luxurious warmth of an electric blanket and my Nalgene hot-water bottle, at Khumbu Lodge, Namche," Zondo wrote in a post alongside a photo of sentimental items laid out on a rock. "In this expansive state, MaRiky, I laid out something of a memorial for you at the Base Camp rock," she added. Among memorabilia was a 'Riky Rick…We Multiply' T-shirt and a chain containing three medallions: first, a medallion of St Michael; second, a St Christopher medallion; and third, a medallion with 'MaRiky' engraved on it. "I could never find the words to clearly set out the depth of awakening that coming to Base Camp and communicating with you through ritual was to me," Zondo wrote, concluding her message to her late son.
