As we celebrate 25 years of Haaretz English, join our vital mission

Scanning the pages of the very first edition of Haaretz in English, from September 1997, triggers a sense of political vertigo. There are reports on how the White House was considering how to pressure Israel on settlements, a skeptical review of a “photogenic” Yair Lapid TV series, and Benjamin Netanyahu was seeking a donor to cover his legal fees.

These news reports feel so familiar it may seem little has changed in the 25 years that have passed. The U.S.-Israel relationship is still firmly front-page news. Israel is still entangled in conflict with, and occupation of, the Palestinians. Lapid is now prime minister and Netanyahu is still seeking donors to cover his legal fees.

But as Mark Twain is reputed to have said, history never repeats itself, but it often rhymes. And that is where Haaretz English has made a difference in itsfirst, combative, quarter century.

Celebrate 25 years of Haaretz English Edition with 50% off.

From those early frantic days in a tiny basement newsroom, Haaretz English has become a news source on which millions around the world rely, from the White House to the Gulf, and a platform for debate with whom millions engage – with the passion that this part of the Middle East often provokes.

We have faithfully maintained our mission of transmitting the work of Haaretz’s Hebrew edition, while expanding greatly our own original coverage of Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Just this year, our correspondent Ben Samuels covered President Biden’s trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia – the first officially accredited Israeli journalist to do so.

As Israel heads to elections in November, with parties and coalitions in contention who threaten basic tenets of liberal democracy, Jewish values and civil rights, Haaretz English will offer the clearest, most reliable and most indispensable coverage of events and their repercussions.

Become a subscriber to Haaretz English and be part of this vital mission.

Be part of a crucial conversation about the future of Israel.
