Before the surgery even happens, every patient’s mind races through the questions of what it’ll be like, ‘living with a bag’.

Will I smell bad? What if the bag leaks? What happens with flatulence? Will the bulge show through my clothes? How will my skin react to a constant adhesive?

And how will living with a bag affect my personal and social relationships?

Sometimes being an ostomate (person living with a bag) can be temporary, but often it’s permanent and the stoma remains open.

In either case, there’s a great need for information, emotional and practical support, access to the correct products, and advice on daily and ongoing management.
