The Front Page: Jefferson Parish's naïveté; new boss in Birdland; turnover atop St. Tammany schools

By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor

COVID NAÏVETÉ: naïveté Jefferson Parish, the second most populous in Louisiana, has logged the most coronavirus infections and the most COVID-19 deaths in Louisiana since the pandemic began more than a year ago. Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng on Tuesday identified these hot spots and said she was "naïve to think that after the vaccines were available" she would not be seeing a fourth surge in infections.

Elsewhere on the public health front:

  • This one graphic shows how COVID's fourth wave in Louisiana compares to the previous three. (Not pretty.)
  • Some people are anxious that COVID is striking vaccinated people. Doctors are not.
  • Louisiana's hospitals are straining under a ferocious uptick in COVID cases without a full complement of their most precious resource.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends that even inoculated people wear masks indoors in parts of the United States with a spike in infections.
  • The daily numbers for Louisiana. (Also not pretty.)

BIRDLAND: The New Orleans Pelicans cycled through two head coaches in 26 months. So it was not surprising that when the front office interviewed Willie Green to take over for next season, they had an honest conversation about the churn. Green is returning to the team he played for in 2010-11, and those who have known him since he was a kid aren't surprised one bit at his ascent.

CHALLENGING YEAR: Of the 55 public schools in St. Tammany Parish, almost one third will have new principals when classes begin Aug. 6. Here are some of the challenges they face.

All this and much more are in today’s Lunch Line and on NOLA.com. Thanks for starting your day with us.
