Letter from the editor:

Good morning. Here are some highlights from this week's stories:

  • The Oscars on Sunday delivered all sorts of surprising moments (a performance by Eminem, Joaquin Phoenix's thoughts on cows), but the best surprise by far was Parasite taking four awards home. Dan Schindel breaks down why these wins were so historic.

  • Jim Jarmusch tells Hyperallergic, "I’m not a professional filmmaker — that’s why I don’t go to Hollywood." He elaborates, "For me a 'professional' is concerned with success, and what I’m interested in isn’t success, but love."

  • An American photographer in Shanghai has been documenting the city's largely empty streets as people have avoided going out due to the coronavirus. This week people will start going back to work.

  • In bizarre art world news, an art critic at Latin America's largest art fair, Zona Maco, broke a sculpture. “In that moment, as though it had heard my commentary and sensed what I thought about it, the work shattered,” she said (who is she, Matilda?).

Stay tuned for our coverage revolving around Frieze Los Angeles this week. Matt Stromberg gives a preview of some of the projects.
