The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Kelly P. Kissel | Metro editor

Today's the first day of school in Ascension Parish, and Ellyn Couvillion visited a brand new school to see how the children were faring. Their principal was dressed up as a knight, and the students showed up with an extra article of clothing, too: a mask intended to limit the spread of the coronavirus during the current surge.

We reported last week on how the trash hauler for East Baton Rouge was reporting a staffing shortage because of illnesses among its workers. Today, Missy Wilkinson breaks down garbage complaints by neighborhood.

And yesterday's hearing into the Seacor tragedy off Port Fouchon included a troubling revelation: While forecasters were warning of severe weather, the news wasn't relayed by the U.S. Coast Guard because of a "connectivity issue" that interfered with transmissions until after the liftboat had already flipped.

Even though Cheba Hut has a marijuana theme, don’t expect to find any pot in the food at the new restaurant. The “stash” at the Ben Hur Road eatery includes plenty of sandwiches, with weed-inspired names like Acapulco Gold and Kali Mist; cookies, and a surprising addition to the drink menu, Kool-Aid. Read about it here.
